With the nation still reeling from the mass shooting in Orlando, the debate over gun rights vs. gun control has once again taken center stage. The national discourse seems scripted at this point: on one side, supporters of gun control argue that measures requiring background checks for firearm purchases or bans on assault rifles will decrease the likelihood of mass shootings. On the other side, gun rights proponents seek to protect the constitutional rights of responsible gun owners and maintain their ability to bear arms and protect themselves.
So, given the current state of gridlock, what can anyone really do about it? The answer may lie on the balance of Democratic and Republican seats in the US Senate. We've identified five Senators who voted against background checks for gun purchases, and are in very tight races: Sen. Rob Portman (R-OH), Sen. Patrick Toomey (R-PA), Sen. Kelly Ayote (R-NH), Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI), and Sen. Richard Burr (R-NC). They are the most vulnerable incumbents - the most flippable seats.
So regardless of whether you are for gun control or gun rights, you can help tip the scales in the Senate in the upcoming elections by supporting or opposing the candidates above. If you oppose limitations to the 2nd Amendment, you can endorse or donate to these candidates in order to help them get re-elected and further support gun rights. If you support background checks for firearm purchases and want to hold these senators accountable, you can do your part to remove them from office by endorsing or donating to their opponents.
Where do you stand? Make yourself heard!
