Ratified in 1951, the twenty-second amendment set term limits for the President. However no such cap has ever been placed on members of Congress, despite calls from some who decry Washington's professional political class.
Advocates of term limits argue that they will help put power back in the hands of citizens and away from entrenched incumbents. They cite some long-serving members of the House and Senate who, like Democrat John Conyers (MI-13), have been in Congress for nearly 50 years!
Term limits are mostly championed by elected officials on the right who believe that government has become too out-of-touch. Leaders like Rand Paul (R-KY), Matt Salmon (AZ-5), Rick Allen (GA-12), and Thomas Massie (KY-4) have all spoken out in favor of imposing limits.
