Many credit the Obama campaign's unprecedented use of social media as reason for its success in 2008 and 2012. Nowadays, social media savvy is considered to be as integral to campaigns as traditional get-out-the-vote efforts.

Twitter, perhaps more than other social media platforms, is the ideal channel for candidates to make announcements, generate buzz and engage with a digital audience in real-time. Given the importance of an online presence, we ranked the 2016 presidential hopefuls according to their total followers as of 3pm PST on July 13.

Both Hilary Clinton and Donald Trump top our list as the only two candidates with more than one million Twitter followers. A distant second are senators Marco Rubio and Rand Paul, each with more than 600,000 followers.
