Former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum staged a major upset in the 2012 Republican presidential primary with an insurgent campaign that took him from “bottom of the heap” status to become the ultimate victor in the Iowa caucuses. Santorum eventually lost the nomination to former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney whose allies spent upwards of $30 million dollars in negative ads to defeat him.

But now, having lost 2 consecutive races, including his own senate seat in 2006, Santorum is hoping his status as the GOP's 2012 “runner-up” will help him catch a wave in a crowded 2016 field.
