No candidate wants to be caught in the crosshairs of the National Rifle Association. Over the years, this staunch supporter of Second Amendment rights has scored some major victories - defeating politicians who have voted for, or introduced, various forms of gun-control legislation. In 2014, the GOP's senate takeover was due in no small part to attack ads from the NRA, which spent $12.5 million to defeat these Democratic incumbents and candidates in targeted races:
But the NRA has had some misfires as well. Take for instance the biggest targets of its independent expenditures in 2012: Democratic Senators Sherrod Brown (OH), Bill Nelson (FL), Tim Kaine (VA), Claire McCaskill (MO), and Tammy Baldwin (WI). In total the NRA spent over $2.5 million against these candidates only to them triumph on Election Day.
Talk about wasted ammo.
What about you? Where do you stand on guns? If you are for gun control, you can show your support to the candidates above, to help fight the NRA's influence in politics. If you are for gun rights, you can donate to the candidates supported by the NRA, to help advance the cause of gun ownership. Choose your side via the buttons below.
Every cycle, hundreds of millions of dollars are spent to oppose candidates on both sides. Can you guess who are the presidential candidates who historically have had the most money spent to oppose them?
