Ever since the Obama campaign successfully used social networking and technology in their efforts to win the election, other politicians have crafted their own strategies for connecting with voters in similar ways. Most campaigns rely especially heavily on email to solicit donations, get out the vote, and spread their message. With the 2016 presidential campaign on the horizon, candidates are inundating inboxes at high volumes.
We wanted to see how the bulk of campaign emails reflect on the key issues of 2016 and the perspectives of the candidates addressing those issues. We studied the text of the emails sent by a handful of GOP candidates to see if we could boil down their positions with just a few key words and phrases. Check out the word clouds we created from the emails of GOP primary contenders Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz, Mike Huckabee, and Rand Paul.
