Prince George's has a lot to be proud of. This is a diverse county with amazing educators and students. With such close access to our nation's capital and a booming tech industry nearby, there is no doubt that PGCPS can be one of the top school systems in the nation. However, right now the system is facing some significant challenges. This is evident through the excessive amount of teachers on administrative leave, the loss of the Head Start Program due to scandal, the creation of cell phone towers on school grounds, the de-funding of Creative Writing and AP Support programs. Additionally, many schools are overcrowded, in disrepair and suffer from high teacher turnover rates.

We need to fix this.

Who am I?

My name is Shayla Adams-Stafford and I am a career public school educator. For the past 9 years I have taught as a History and Government Teacher in Durham, NC and Washington D.C.. Presently I am an Instructional Coach in DCPS and I operate an education non-profit, RemixEducation. I have dedicated my life to improving public education; here is a bit more about my education career:

I am a Nationally Board Certified Teacher.

Last year I was recognized by the White House for Teaching.

My non-profit, RemixEducation has provided positive youth mentoring programs for over 100 students.

I have trained teachers on the local, state and national level about best practices in teaching.

As a product of public schools, I know the value of a quality education. As a daughter of a single mother, and granddaughter of Caribbean immigrants education was the most important topic in our household. As my husband and I begin to plan our own family here in PG County, I want to send my children to the local school. That is why I am running for school board- to improve our schools for the future of our county.

If I am elected, we will have the voice of an actual educator on the board to stand up for the rights of teachers and students.

We will expose and stamp out corruption in the school system by increasing transparency and accountability.

We will put children FIRST and leverage resources to bring the best programs to the county for our students. Programs that raise the level of rigor in our classrooms, recruit and retain highly qualified teachers and increase the amount of educational technology available to all students.

In order to do this, I need your help.

I need 20K to be considered a viable candidate for this race. Will you make a pledge toward this goal? Remember your card will only be charged if I decide to run.

We need your time. We will be knocking doors and making phone calls to let everyone know about the change needed in PGCPS. Can you spare some time as a volunteer?

We need to spread the word. Can you tell a friend, and get them out to the polls on election day?

I am fired up about what we can accomplish in Prince Georges County. Our students deserve the best --let's give them what they deserve!
