Sala Udin is a Freedom Rider, Community Organizer, Community Leader, Nonprofit Executive, Actor, and Former Pittsburgh City Councilman. He is now dedicating his efforts to becoming the School Board Director for the 3rd District of Pittsburgh Public Schools.

In 2002, while a member of Pittsburgh City Council, Sala Udin approached Rev. Dr. Johnnie Monroe and proposed to form a collaboration of Hill District churches and schools, which came to be known as the Hill District Education Council (HDEC). Although retired from City Council, Mr. Udin continues to serve and co-founder and co-chairman of HDEC, working to reform School District policies and practices to improve academic outcomes for Hill District elementary and high school students.

Recent events in Pittsburgh public schools have made it abundantly clear that meaningful change cannot just be made from the sidelines. Changing the outcome of student performance and parent engagement must come from a collaboration between education advocates pushing up from the bottom and representatives on the School Board pushing down from above. That’s why Sala Udin stepped up and came out of retirement from electoral politics to use his vast experience to serve on an under-appreciated, non-paying position on the Pittsburgh School Board.
