Free the Press needs your help to stand up for journalists' right to report and your right to know. With reporters under attack from hostile police and an administration that calls the media “the opposition party,” it’s critical that you join us in saying "enough"!

We need the help of the Really American community to meet our goal of holding an alternative press briefing across from the White House to stand up for our First Amendment and the critical service the press provides in exposing truth.

Your help is needed at this critical juncture - we need to hit our goal of $15,000 by Sunday. Will you join Free the Press now with a donation of $25 or more? (Every small donation makes a big difference!)

Nomiki Konst started Free the Press when it became clear that the media is under attack here in the U.S. in an unprecedented way. Journalists from Standing Rock to NYC to DC must have the First Amendment protections they need to stand up for the truth. You can see in this video how police aggressively blocked Nomiki and others in NYC to try to stop her from covering the outrage over President Trump’s executive order pushing DAPL forward.

Investigative and front-line journalists are our best allies in exposing corporate and governmental abuses. And the DC administration and the fossil fuel industry want to shut up the press because they know their actions won’t be tolerated if exposed to public scrutiny!

You only have until Sunday to help us hit the $15,000 goal that Nomiki and her team need to hold an alternative press conference in DC. In this press conference, Free the Press will share the stories of brave frontline journalists at Standing Rock and beyond and stand up for the freedom of the press to take on corporate polluters and their allies.

Please stand with Free the Press right now with a donation of any size to ensure you help us meet this crucial deadline for standing up for our environment!

You know that frontline journalists and in-depth investigations are required to expose threats to our planet so we can take action. The Associated Press has documented fracking’s ill effects on groundwater and public health in state after state; Inside Climate News showed the decades before climate change was well known, Exxon knew, then hid, the truth of its contribution to climate chaos; and just in the past few weeks, The Washington Post has reported extensively on new EPA head Scott Pruitt’s cozy relationship with fossil fuel companies.

You can keep the heat on, but only if you act now to help bringing Nomiki’s press conference to the White House! We have just days to make sure this happens!

Already, more than 350 of you have now joined as journalists and contributors. Let’s be clear: We stand for transparency and our First Amendment right to ask questions. This is a moment to stand for our Constitution.

This is not a partisan issue - statesmen, journalists and good government groups are all speaking out on behalf of the free press.

Recently, White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer has used his power to shut out several news outlets from briefings. The White House used its power to engage friendly media outlets to disparage reporters who ask tough questions. While not every White House enjoys tough questions, the climate today is unprecedented.

Free the Press is here to stand for the right to ask questions, to speak truth to power, and we need your help.

You can read our past emails and updates on Medium. Our website is freethepress.net.

If you would like to make a donation from outside of the United States, please use THIS form. Thank you!

Free the Press and the environment

This week we began reaching out to members of the environmental community to support our upcoming alternative press briefing. The media has long been a critical ally of the environmental movement by investigating the sources of pollution and holding government and corporations accountable.

The environmental movement relies on investigative journalists to expose the corporate abuses that threaten our planet. And let’s not forget that Rep. Jason Chaffetz put forth a plan to devalue open space nationwide, a prelude to auctioning it off for mining, logging and fracking. Chaffetz plan only fell apart under media scrutiny and resulting public outrage.

We need a free press more than ever when the action of our public servants won't hold up under scrutiny.

Freedom to cover direct action - #NoDAPL

For the past 24 hours, we've focused the #freethepress crowdfunding on atrocities against journalists at Standing Rock and other #NoDAPL protests. Can you help us continue to spread the word on Facebook and Twitter?

Here are some sample posts:

Attacks on the press at the WH are insane. In the field, they're violent. Help us expose assaults on #NoDAPL media: https://www.crowdpac.com/c/freethepress?source_code=social-022417

#freethepress and @ReallyAmerican1 are taking press freedoms right to the White House, and bringing #NoDAPL along: https://www.crowdpac.com/c/freethepress?source_code=social-022417

What would happen at #NoDAPL actions w/out media coverage? When the state targets press, we all lose. #freethepress https://www.crowdpac.com/c/freethepress?source_code=social-022417

Facebook:

At the White House, the state is blocking journalists from briefings. At Standing Rock, its shooting them with rubber bullets, arresting and charging them with felonies. Help expose atrocities against the press at #NoDAPL actions by supporting an alternative press briefing at the White House. https://www.crowdpac.com/c/freethepress?source_code=social-022417

The press is under attack - and not just at the White House briefing room. What would happen to the water protectors at Standing Rock if the cameras went dark? Help a consortium of journalists stand up for the truth with an alternative press briefing across from the White House. https://www.crowdpac.com/c/freethepress?source_code=social-022417

The Washington Post’s new masthead: “Democracy Dies in Darkeness.” Today, Free the Press is crowdfunding to bring to light the frontline abuses against journalists covering #NoDAPL. https://www.crowdpac.com/c/freethepress?source_code=social-022417

Thank you!
