Climate change and global warming are inarguably the biggest threat to a living nurturing planet and our continued survival as a species. In the forty plus years since the formation of the EPA and enactment of NEPA and despite continued efforts by organizations like Greenpeace and 350.org our planet has continued to degrade to the point that 40% of our waterways do not or barely sustain aquatic life. We have long exceeded the 350 PPM recommended as a minimum safe level to avoid global warming. As of March 6, we are at 407 PPM of CO2.
It is time to try new strategies and direct democracy using law to elevate the rights of communities to say NO to harmful development over that of corporate privilege is not only timely and novel but over 200 municipalities have already pass such ordinances, from Mendocino County, California to Pittsburgh, PA.
