I'm James Courage Singer and I'm running for Utah's 3rd Congressional District.

I have a special tie to the land. For hundreds of years, my Navajo ancestors lived, worked, and raised families in what we call "Utah." My blood is tied to the land. It's a sacred place; one set apart by the Holy People. I have an obligation to protect the sacred. That's why I will fight to protect our landscapes and ecology from destructive resource extractive projects and corporate greed. Utah's environment and biodiversity are tied to our many cultural identities and decimating the land leaves nothing for us now nor for future generations. That's bad policy and it's unsustainable. We need responsible development that builds on our greatest assets, not sell them away to the highest bidder.

I'm a sociologist and educator. Every day I'm learning, researching, or teaching about the many social forces and mechanisms in our society that provide opportunities for people or keeps people from grasping them. Economic inequality is one of the most pressing issues facing our country today. We need representatives to help people get their fair share of the prosperity, not create the conditions where the rich get richer off the hard work and labor of everyone else. But that's exactly the trend of the past 40 years. Instead, we need to create the conditions where hard work actually allows us in the working and middle classes to experience economic success and social mobility. I will fight to restore power to workers and employees, and re-embed the market back into the rest of society so that one parent, working a full-time job, can provide for their family and live a life of dignity.

We need leaders who actually lead in Congress, not get in line behind morally bereft leaders and enable systemic corruption. I am of the belief that when we know something is wrong, we have to take a stand to oppose it because it's the right thing to do. There are many things happening in Washington that just aren't right, and our current Utah Congressional delegation hasn't risen to the occasion to stand for something - or at least the things of greatest importance. And that's one of the main reasons I'm running. We cannot sit idly by while the corrupt and powerful have their way without consequences. I will fight to restore democracy back into our political institutions and oppose the movement towards oligarchy and plutocracy.

Join me in this historic campaign and have the #CourageToChange!

We won the party nomination!!

We're so pleased to announce that James won the nomination outright at the State Convention on Saturday, April 28, with 77 percent of the vote in a landslide victory!

Our volunteers were phenomenal -- coming in from different parts of the district. To them we want to express that your dedication to a shared cause is what will move us forward in the campaign and the general election in November.

At convention, we were honored to receive almost every caucus endorsement!

Some buzz from social media:

"This weekend witnessed a historic moment in Native America: James Courage Singer received the Democratic Party nomination to become the Democratic Candidate for Utah's 3rd Congressional district. He is the first Native American and first Navajo to become a nominee for federal office in Utah!" --  Moroni Benally, co-founder, Utah League of Native American Voters

This is a historic moment and we're all so happy that we are sharing it with you!

The Campaign is back! This time for Utah's 3rd District.

Since I suspended my Senate campaign, a lot of things have happenedin our politics, but still hasn't got much better. President Trump continues his course of morally bereft leadership, and Utah's Congressional Delegation have continued to stand by him. Students are raising their voice pleading for something to be done about guns in America. Bears' Ears is an example of how communities can work at a grassroots level for change, only to be blocked by big money and greed. Americans still want healthcare, and we're experiencing the surge of power from #MeToo.

We still have a lot to fix when it comes to systemic racism, especially in our criminal justice system, and providing high quality to education for our children and ourselves.

Also climate change is real #justsaying.

That is why I am running for Congress in Utah CD3. Solutions are out there, and though they may not be easy to implement, groups of people wanting change have done it before and we can do it now. I'm ready to take it to them and stand with you for a better world.

We broke our first $5000 goal!

Today we broke our first $5000 goal on CrowdPac! Thank you for all your support! From other donations, we're at around $6500 total. Plus the volunteer hours which are adding up from a growing volunteer list. We are off to a great start since we officially launched our campaign last week.

Today we held a press conference with the Utah League of Native American Voters, the Me4U coalition, and PANDOS condemning the condescending and racially charged remarks from Orrin Hatch about how "Indians don't understand..." about Bears Ears.

Allow me to roll my eyes...

If I can be perfectly clear with Orrin Hatch: We understand.

We are lawyers, policy analysts, sociologists, community activists, teachers, and elected leaders. We are more than educated enough to understand. We understand that his comments are what keeps indigenous people from overcoming hundreds of years of obstacles blocking us from exercising our life-ways. We understand that his position, his careless comment, is just another way to keep indigenous peoples in a box and from exercising our inherent freedom to make our own decisions regarding our politics, economics, culture, and social life. I am astonished by these comments. I feel angry. I am determined, more than ever, to be that indigenous voice in Congress. We all need it.

We'll be putting up video from that press conference and a transcript of my statement on the campaign Facebook page soon: www.facebook.com/SingerForSena...

Thanks again!

James
