Our country is in a moral crisis. I have seen President Obama depicted as a monkey, immigrants called rapists and a man who bragged about grabbing a woman by the pussy leads our country. Where is our city on a hill? Where is the light that was to lead the world?

We must ride my friends. We must ride to defend our nation not against our enemies or our political opponents but for the idea of what America is. If we lose it then we lose the soul of America and the light the world once knew becomes a cold shadow of it's former glory. Be that light. Be the America we all love.

We all have the responsibility to build a better future for our children, from now! from Texas!

Background

I was born in Garland, TX May 31st 1987. My mother worked as an insurance adjuster and my father was a welder. Growing up, I got to see two totally different worlds. My mother worked in an office with a well established policy for almost anything and the flexibility to balance work and family. My father by contrast worked in a factory where shifts began before the sun came up and safety was usually not a top concern of managers.

In 2008, I was a delegate for then Senator Obama in Texas. More than anything I believed in the central message of 'Yes We Can'. Our problems are only large if we make them so and only impossible if we fail to try. It is this hope that got me started in politics. Unfortunately, as time went on hope came in short supply as anger and discord rocked the country. I again felt that I should get involved by attending the Jon Stewart Rally To Restore Sanity in Washington D.C in 2010. Of all the people I watched I knew that Jon Stewart had an ability to move the conversation past talking points and get us to somewhere better. At this point I knew I wanted a future in politics but wasn't sure when I should start. So I went back to college finished my bachelors degree in Accounting in 2011 and then a masters degree in Accounting in 2012 both from the University of Texas at Dallas. Then in May of 2015 I got married to Cathy. We have two daughters named Halcyon and Kallie. In 2016, I was a fervent Bernie Sanders supporter because I believed then as I do now that there is something wrong when a majority of Americans make less than $30,000 a year while we have most income growth since the Great Recession going to the top 1%. The truth is that it is at odds with the idea of a just nation. To be a city on a hill, to be a moral nation we must look after each other. We must be our brother's keeper. With the election of Donald Trump I feel that this is true now more than ever. If we fail in this moment we will become another nation, a nation that is obsessed with greed, hatred and sadness. We must be a nation of conscience.

Money In Politics

The defining issue of our time is not whether we are democrats or republicans but whether those with the ability to donate huge sums of money to a campaign should be heard and the rest of us remain silent as our country is bought and sold behind our backs. I will not be silent, I will not be bribed and I will not turn back! This is our moment to reclaim our place as citizens who are the rightful owners of this country and deserve to be heard whether we own a Ferrari or take the bus to work every morning. Therefore, I will not ask for and will not accept ANY donation from a corporation. It's time to take the power back!

Expand Social Security and Medicare

For my entire life, I have heard that Social Security is going bankrupt and Medicare's promise too expensive yet we managed to finance over 5 trillion dollars worth of war in the middle east and trillions more in tax cuts to the wealthiest 1 percent of all Americans. This is completely and totally unacceptable. Fortunately, there is a very simple way to increase Social Security for the elderly and provide a public option to anyone who wants to buy into Medicare. We do this by removing the cap on Social Security and Medicare taxes on ALL sources of income so that regardless of how much you make you pay what a working man pays. It's time we put the country before the needs of a wealthy few!

Tax Reform

Justice must be at the forefront of any talk involving taxation. Today, we face a crisis where those who work are asked to pay a top tax rate of 39.6% meanwhile a person who does not work and makes money from investments pays only a top tax rate of 20%. This must not stand. That is why I am proposing an elimination of the capital gains tax rate for anyone making more than $250,000 and treating all income as earned income. Lets make sure the truck driver and the business owner pay the same taxes!

Education Reform

It takes a village to raise a child and the children of a nation are our nation's hope for a better tomorrow. If a nation's children fails then our nation has failed. We must strive to ensure that every child has an equal opportunity to become important productive members of this great country. Therefore, we must have equal funding for all public schools across this nation regardless of sex, race, class or economic status. We must safeguard our future by protecting our nation's children.

Energy

There comes a time in the life of every nation when we must ask, what kind of a world will we leave behind? Will it be one of hunger, war and strife or will it be one of decency, love and understanding? If we are to leave behind a world better than the one we inherited then we must sacrifice today so that our children might have a tomorrow. In that spirit of sacrifice, I propose we commit at least 1 trillion dollars to energy projects with the ultimate goal being a carbon free world.

Immigration

If the American dream is to live today we must accept the idea that America has always been a place that allows everyone regardless of their station in life to earn a right to a better life. We must be willing to give grace to those most deserving and willing to build a life in the United States. Most often these types of people are children who were brought here through no fault of their own and should be given access to the American dream. That is why I am proposing that all children under the age of 18 who have lived in the United States for at least 5 years, are of good moral character and have managed to finish a high school or GED education in the United States will be given permanent residency status and access to all the same benefits for education and health care as citizens. By guarding these children we guard the future and burnish this country's image as truly the land of opportunity.

Second Amendment

Nothing strikes at the soul so deep as does the wail from the slaughter of innocent children as happened in Newtown, Connecticut in 2012. We have guns to protect us but no safety in our homes. We have the freedom of high powered weapons but no freedom from the terror that lives inside every parent that this day it may be my child's school. This madness must stop. To do this we must be willing to submit every sale from every place to a background check to ensure that the people who buy these guns are responsible citizens. As part of this initiative all guns must be equipped with technology to ensure that only the responsible citizen fires that gun. Lastly we must limit the size of a gun's magazine to ensure that even if a gun is legally purchased it is limited as a means of mass destruction in our homes and our communities. We can build a future where we don't have to live in fear of turning on the television. Come help build this America with me.

Faith

As we look around America today we see a country built on greed and materialism. To buy the things we want we have forsaken a caring society and mortgaged our children's future. Our country has forgotten to ask a very simple question, 'am I my brother's keeper?'I think if we are to be a city on a hill, a land of the righteous we must once again become our brother's keeper.

National Defense

Our veterans and active duty military stand up on a wall at night so the rest of us can sleep easy knowing that they are there to protect us. In the military, they have purpose, drive and a kind of family structure that is supportive. Once they leave the military it is our turn to take care of them by making sure they have good medical care, an education if desired and a way to once again contribute in the civilian world. To do this we must do three things. First, we must work towards a comprehensive program that allows experience earned in the military to be transferred to the civilian world. Second, we must hold all promises made in the GI bill and pensions to our nations heroes as a sacred trust and third, we must work to reduce the bureaucratic nightmare whenever a veteran applies for any earned benefit.

Trade

What does free trade mean? Typically, it means that a company can manufacture, buy and sell anywhere it wants to with little or no import taxes. So, if you were to work for a company that can now move to a lower cost country then that company is likely to use the threat of moving your job to another country in order to reduce your wages. I have no interest in making it easier for American companies to outsource your jobs and I propose that we enact taxes on American companies that outsource to encourage them to create jobs right here in the United States.

Infrastructure

When we look around our country today we do not see a country built for a bright future, we see a country with crumbling roads, bridges and dams that were made by our fathers or our grandfathers. They made America in their image in their time and it is time that we left our mark for our own generation. To do this, we need to dedicate over a trillion dollars to rebuild America and create millions of jobs in the process. Imagine a country where we see new roads, buildings and repairs everywhere we go. A place where a high wage for a skilled craftsman is not a pipe dream. A place where we can see the future forming before our eyes. This America is waiting for us to build it.
