Why you should support Ryan Allen

I am an emergency physician. I have spent my career caring for patients from all walks of life in their time of greatest need. Every day I make critical, confident decisions in important situations. I see people whose health and well-being are affected by politicians in Washington.

Lamar Smith and Donald Trump have declared a war on truth. They choose to ignore facts and scientific data. They are willing to attack scientists and doctors for the benefit of lobbyists that support them. They are willing to put the cost of healthcare out of reach for small business owners and individuals, while giving huge tax breaks to the wealthy and to insurance companies. They have also declared war on the scientific community over climate change at a time when Texas is ready to lead the world in clean energy. Lamar Smith has shown that he cares more about keeping his own job than providing jobs for Texans.

It’s time to bring smart, compassionate leadership back to Congress. It’s time to send people to Washington that are more interested in the health and prosperity of Texans than in the status quo. I have to use the best information to diagnose and solve problems. I will make the tough decisions needed to get the United States back on a smarter path to prosperity.

“I have worked with Ryan Allen for 4 years, he is an excellent physician, leader & human. I would be proud to have him represent me in Congress.”

  • Byron Miller endorsed

“I met Ryan in college and have been good friends with him for almost 30 years. You'd be hard pressed to find someone smarter than Ryan, or someone that cares more deeply about people. He majored in international relations at USC, volunteered with the Peace Corps for two years, and became an MD out of a desire to do as much as he could to help people. Our congress desperately needs new members that will make positive changes for our health care system and the environment. Climate change threatens humanity as a whole and can no longer be denied by the likes of Lamar Smith. I know that Ryan has always had a strong drive to make positive changes in the world, and he has the intellect and people skills to actually make great things happen. I can't imagine a better candidate for congress.”

  • Jeff Rhodes endorsed

“Ryan Allen for District 21 will bring intelligence and an outsiders perspective, both of which are sorely needed given the complexity of the issues we face and the changes that are necessary.”

Earth Day and the March for Science

I am thrilled today to see the March for Science happening all over the world. In a world where people are barraged with misinformation and it is harder for people to judge where the truth lies, it is important to remind ourselves and the world that the scientific method offers the most powerful way to understand the world around us. The work of scientists in America and abroad offers us our best chance to find inventive ways to address challenges such as the global effects of climate change. Neil deGrasse Tyson's excellent short film released for this occasion says it beautifully, and is worth 5 minutes of your time.

Lamar Smith's efforts to bully, intimidate and obstruct scientists for the benefit of the lobbyists that support him must stop. Our chances of removing his toxic presence from Congress have never looked brighter.

Please pledge to our campaign today to help bring a new generation of politicians to Washington that respects the scientific community and their invaluable efforts to help us address the challenges that face our world.

Syria

About a year ago, I helped to staff a clinic in Greece for refugees fleeing the violence in Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan. Having a chance to meet some of the families seeking asylum from the horrors in their homeland reaffirmed my feeling that the US has a historic opportunity to do more to help in this humanitarian catastrophe.

The Trump administration needs a comprehensive strategy on Syria. Starting a new war without regard to the effect that it has on the Syrian people is strategically suspect and morally backward. A policy of keeping out refugees motivates and promotes groups like ISIS, and it puts the men and women serving in our military at increased risk for no reason.

Our vetting process for refugees is comprehensive and effective. A ban on refugees is nothing more than a cowardly response to an international crisis.

We are closing in on 100 donors...

...and it is no surprise why. People all over the country are getting fired up about renewed efforts by the Trump administration and Congress to gut our healthcare system. They would like to put healthcare out of reach for millions of Americans, raising the out-of-pocket costs across the board for the benefit of the wealthy. The costs fall directly on American workers and the small businesses that employ them.

The goal of all efforts to reform our healthcare system should be quality affordable healthcare for all Americans. Anything that does not pursue that goal misses the point of why healthcare has become so expensive or out of reach for the great majority of Americans, including hardworking people throughout Central Texas.

Help me send a message to the so-called leaders that are willing to move the state of our healthcare back decades. Pledge when you can, and get the word out to any and all Texans that we are here to fight for a healthcare system that values health over profit.

Hope for new leadership!

It is hard to focus on the positive amidst the constant stream of news about the embarrassing and harmful actions taken by the Trump administration, along with its collaborators like Lamar Smith. There is plenty to get excited about, though.

All over the country, a new generation of aspiring political leaders are starting campaigns to oust the old guard of do-nothing politicians. There are exciting races brewing in Utah, Georgia, California and right here in Texas.

Our fundraising effort is right on track. I am so happy to see the names of some of my former Peace Corps colleagues on the list of our supporters. I am also very flattered that so many of my physician colleagues are getting behind the cause. I may be most proud that some of my old friends from Burnet are supporting me.

We all know that it takes money to run a successful campaign. It is even more important, though, to get our message out to voters and like-minded advocates for change. Please keep sharing this website and our Facebook page. Check in with people that you think might be interested in making real change happen in the political landscape of Texas!

We met our first fundraising goal!

I am overwhelmed at the response to this effort. I would like to thank everyone that has donated so far. I felt hopeful that we would meet our goal in the first week, but to meet it in less than 24 hours is really special.

I have met with several other potential candidates in this race, and there is a lot of excitement in their camps, too (as well there should be). I think that all of this speaks to a strong desire in our district and around the country to make meaningful change to our leadership so that we can start focusing on the critical issues that are facing our nation. Please stay engaged, and check in on Facebook. Continuing to raise funds within our district is going to be key. It is equally important to bring in money from like-minded people in other states. Keep sharing news of our fight!

Off and running!

Thank you so much for the early support, everyone. I am thrilled with the interest that has already been generated. For those of you that I have not met, I plan to keep my Facebook page updated in order to make sure that people interested in this race know where I stand on the issues that affect them. Please feel free to contact me via the FB page, too.
