As an educator, I have devoted my life to helping people from every walk of life to achieve the dreams and goals that an education can provide. Every time I walk into a classroom I believe in giving students my absolute very best. Doing so ensures that they will be able to excel beyond the classroom, provide a life for themselves, and a life for their family. Something that every American embraces and has always envisioned.

This is the charge of a public servant. To help people achieve their goals and provide real solutions to the problems that they face. Our district needs someone who is devoted and dedicated to serving the people and the issues that are affecting them not their own self-interests.

The representative of my congressional district Ted Budd has begun his term in Washington by ignoring his charge as a public servant. He is committed to an agenda that will ultimately hurt more people than it will help. Specifically, the ones that did not vote for him and especially the ones that elected him. Our district needs true representation, someone who is devoted to the well-being of all people, someone who is determined to stand for the fundamental rights of the people, and, someone who is dedicated and committed to bridging the gap to the American Dream. If you agree with me, unite with this campaign! With your support, we can make this happen.

My Story

I am a son of the common man. My father was a long distance truck driver who followed in the footsteps of his father and brothers to spend many years on the road in order to provide for their family. My mother was a stay-at-home mom for many years before my father injured his neck and back on the job and could no longer work. Together, they taught my siblings and me, the value of a dollar; what an honest day of work feels like; the importance of an education; and how to provide for your family.

I carried these values with me to Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, NC. While attending JCSU I learned the history and significance of standing for what is right even in the face of opposition. This is the enduring legacy of those students who integrated Charlotte area lunch counters. I graduated with my B.S. in Computer Science Engineering in 2004. After graduation, I went to work for a small printing company while simultaneously working on an MBA. In 2007, I graduated with my MBA from the University of Phoenix.

In 2008 my wife and I were married.  We have been blessed with six children (5 boys, 1 princess) the oldest is 8 years old and the youngest is almost two. Shortly after one month of marriage I found my calling as an educator and became a high school CTE teacher. I devoted two years of my life to helping my students achieve their dreams and goals of going to college or seek a trade.

In 2010, I followed in the steps of my father and brother and became an ordained Minister. In that same year, I made the move to higher education to teach business and computer courses. Now I currently serve as an instructor/program coordinator for Health Management, Introduction to computers, and Office Administration programs for a local community college.

Since 2008 I have dedicated my professional career to helping people from all walks of life; assisting them regardless of who they are or where they come from to achieve their personal goals and provide a better life for their family. I want to bring that experience, devotion, and dedication to this side of public service for our district.

Why I’m running

Protect, Invest, and Improve Public Education

Public schools were created to give every child the opportunity to advance in life through a quality education. Having taught in the public school system as a K-12 educator, currently as a community college instructor; and being a product of the public school system- I believe that every child should receive a great education. The republicans seek to defund public education and distribute vouchers instead. I will fight vigorously against this agenda and seek new innovative initiatives to improve the quality of education for every child.

Protect and improve the Affordable Healthcare Act

Health care is an act of compassion. Americans should be able to buy reasonable and affordable health care without being forced to have to make a choice between buying and not buying medicine. Republicans seek to push an agenda that will leave millions of Americans deprived of coverage and worse off than ever before. I will fight for this act of compassion so that the lives of millions of Americans can get the health care coverage they need.

Protect Medicaid and Medicare

We must protect historic legislation from the 20th century. Millions of Americans signed this social contract long ago and expect it to be there for them when they need it. I will not allow a Republican agenda to rip this important piece of legislation from the hands of our citizens.

Secure Living Wages

Americans are faced with the difficulty of trying to figure out how raise kids, take care of the family and still be able to pay the bills. There seems to be a reoccurring theme of asking the poor and middle class to constantly do more with less. Make the difficult decision of which bills to pay, put food on the table, and have enough to take care of life's unexpected expenses. American workers need and deserve a living wage to ease this burden and someone who will fight for this to happen. I am determined and committed to making this happen.

Immigration Reform

Immigration is the story of America. We must be united in our resolve to never stop telling our story and be committed to helping others become a part of our story. We must make every effort to make immigration reform a top priority and provide a better path to citizenship.

Support Small Businesses

The backbone of our country are the small businesses of our communities. We need someone who will fight to make it easier to start and maintain a small business. Doing so will allow for the creation of jobs and stabilization of the community.

Honor Indigenous Tribal Nations

The sovereign rights of Native Americans must be protected. It is apparent that the republican agenda seeks to put corporations and potential profits before the rights of America's indigenous nations. I will fight to keep this from happening.

Support HBCU's and Minority-Serving Institutions

HBCU's and minority-serving institutions serve as a vital hallmark of the continued success of our society by serving and providing an opportunity for minorities of many demographics access to a quality education.

Protect LGBT Rights and equality

Americans, regardless of sexual orientation, or who they choose to love, deserve to have their rights protected. Discrimination in any form is unacceptable. I will be a champion for the fundamental rights of all people.

Public-Private Coalition to Create Jobs

America was not created by one person but by a coalition of people. And it will take a coalition between the public and private sectors to create jobs that pay well, and offer great benefits.

Support our troops and veterans

Our troops and veterans deserve our respect and admiration for all that they have done and are doing to keep America safe. Especially, when they come home from serving our country they deserve our unwavering support for all of their years of service. I will always fight for our troops and veterans.

Protect Voting Rights

The ability to vote in this country is a sacred fundamental right that is constantly being attacked by republicans. Republican voter suppression tactics include Gerry Mandering, purging voters from the roll, reducing the number of voting locations and times to vote, and strict voter i.d. laws. I will fight to make voting more accessible so that every citizen can participate in our democracy.

“I endorse Behiah McMiller because our current Congressional rep has his mind already made up to take the ultra-conservative side on everything, and wouldn't even listen when I reminded him that he could not possibly know how very much Planned Parenthood meant to mothers and ALL women.”
