Why you should support Jeff Bleich

We’re in the middle of a radical change to our work force. Hard-working Californians are asking tough questions because they feel left behind by this new economy, but no one in government is answering them.

We’re going to have to educate our kids differently, empower workers with new opportunities, and stop doing things that don’t work. We can’t count on politics as usual to get us there, or to protect our shores from climate change, safeguard our homes from cyber-crime, enable communities to fight the epidemic of addiction, or unite a polarized nation.

Until we take on the hard issues, until we have a vision for those issues, we’ll stay where we are: fighting old fights and blaming each other.

Every time we’ve been at a point like this, Californians have forged a way forward. My goal is simple—I’m running for Lt. Governor to help us solve the tough problems that are holding back hard-working Californians.

-Jeff

About Jeff:

Jeff is a former top aide to President Obama, having served in his administration as special counsel to the President, U.S. Ambassador to Australia, and senior advisor. For three decades, he has been devoted to meeting the needs of middle-class Californians as a lawyer, teacher, and community leader. Now he's back serving Californians again.

As a middle-class kid, Jeff grew up learning the value of working hard and helping others. He was born on a U.S. Army base in Germany, and his family was able to move into a small home in Connecticut on his dad’s VA loan. His mom was a receptionist and his dad was the neighborhood dentist. Good public schools opened up a world of opportunities, and he went to college on a combination of work-study, loans, and grants.

Jeff met Becky at Amherst College and they got married right after graduation. He finished grad school at Harvard University, and then received his law degree from UC Berkeley.

After graduating at the top of his class and clerking for the Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, Jeff helped shape Munger, Tolles, and Olson, LLP into one of the most successful and revered law firms in California.

While building a successful career practicing law, Jeff always remembered the opportunities he had and strove to give back. He took many cases that didn’t come with a paycheck, but instead helped some of our most vulnerable Californians win justice and get ahead.

He served as California State University Board Chair because he wanted to make sure that every person in California who worked hard in school would have the same chance that he had to get a world-class education and succeed.

He also served as president of the California State Bar, where he championed California's neglected middle class. He worked to make systemic changes to ensure all Californians had a strong voice in our legal system, even if they couldn't afford to hire a big law firm.

As a U.S. Ambassador, his efforts included overseeing record growth in trade and investment between the U.S. and Australia, implementing the Defense Trade Cooperation Treaty, establishing new alliances for cybersecurity, and executing a new space cooperation agreement that supported the Mars Curiosity rover landing.

His work on behalf of our nation has earned him several of the federal government's highest civilian honors. Among them, in 2013, he received the State Department's Sue Cobb Prize for Exemplary Diplomatic Service from Secretary Kerry—an award reserved for the nation's top non-career Ambassador.

In addition to his legal, cybersecurity, and policy work, Jeff is now using his experience to help create opportunities for California students as Chair of the Fulbright Board, and to create jobs in California and grow our economy as a member of Governor Brown’s International Trade and Investment Council.

Jeff is currently a partner in the public policy and regulation division at Dentons. Jeff works in Oakland and he and his wife, Becky, have raised their three children, Jake, Matt, and Abby in the East Bay. He volunteers his time locally to help foster youth and stop domestic violence.

Jeff gets outside whenever he can for a run or row around Lake Merritt, and he’s such a big Elvis fan that the Secret Service gave him the codename “Elvis” when he served as Ambassador.

When you give people a chance, they do amazing things.

I opened my committee last week and wasn’t sure what to expect. We just asked for an honest response and within minutes we had people asking how they could donate.

Now – just days later – you’ve already pushed us past our first goal. Thank you! The more people who are inspired to engage, the sooner we can change the way politics is done.

To me, how we run is as important as why we run. If you feel the same way, then please give and pass this along to your friends.
