Why you should support Tom Pappas

Our representatives in Washington have not, do not, and will not care about the problems facing us every day.  Whether you are like me, a Millennial, who worries about student loans, climate change, and economic trends or you are older and worry about healthcare, retirement, and providing the types of opportunities for your own children that you had, there is one person who does not understand what makes you anxious.  That person is Rep. Trey Hollingsworth, and that is why I am running for Congress.

I am the grandson of Greek immigrants who came through Ellis Island to make a better life for themselves and their children.  My grandparents settled down in Indiana, had my father, worked hard, and ran a successful restaurant, thereby fulfilling the American Dream for themselves.  My mother, the last of eight children, was the first one in her family to go to college and became an elementary/special education public school teacher.  After my father's MS diagnosis put him on disability, we worked hard for my sister and I to attend college on 21st Century Scholarships.  In high school, I was an Eagle Scout, President of National Honor Society, and member of countless other public service clubs.  During my time at the University of Notre Dame, I anchored my intermural football time through two championship seasons and was selected as a Fellow to the Center for the Study of the Presidency and Congress, which trained us to be effective public servants.  Moreover, I worked for and on various congressional campaigns before graduating, marrying my college sweetheart, having children, and attending Indiana University for graduate school.

I know how hard it is to make ends meet in this economy.  I know how crippling student loans can be.  I know what it is like to worry about paying for medical care or if my children's Medicaid will be terminated.  I understand the plight that affects thousands of Hoosiers, and the time for change has come.  Putting the burden on the backs of those already downtrodden is not only irresponsible but morally reprehensible.  We need a Congress that thinks about those who have the least among us rather than how do we benefit those have enough.  I am running to put my years of political experience together with my passion for helping those around me.

My Campaign Message:  3 Core Areas

1) Healthcare Available to All

We need a healthcare system that allows everyone to receive the care they need.  Whether that is single-payer universal or a public option to the ACA, I am in favor of healthcare reform that ensures everyone can get what they need, when they need it.  To that end I support transferable insurance that is not tied to a particular employer.  Too many of us work in 3, 4, or more careers in our lives, but our insurance is provided by separate employers.  Allowing insurance plans to transfer from employer to employer will free up innovators and entrepreneurs to develop new jobs and spur local economies' development.  Moreover, a public option to the ACA will provide at least one marketplace provider in rural and other regions of the country bereft of choices when Aetna, Humana, and other large providers leave the marketplace.

2) Jobs

We need a 21st century economy in Southern Indiana and across America.  Too many of our jobs are able to be automated or outsourced, which leads people to have to go back to school and retrain for an entirely different career or move their families to a job that hasn't (but will) left the country.  The world is changing at a far quicker pace than our ability to provide job training and trade skills to these workers.  While we cannot change the world, we can change the way we provide job training by analyzing which careers are likely to suffer from automation and outsourcing and AVOID training people in those fields!

3) Tax Reform

It has been 30 years since the last major tax reform, and it is long past time to do it again.  With many very large corporations paying very little to no taxes in America, we must rewrite the tax code to make them pay their fair share for the public services they use to make billions.  In a day when Wal-Mart's owning family members are among the richest people in the world, it is morally reprehensible that they continue to pay their workers next to nothing and very little, if any, federal tax.  I want to simplify the tax code to eliminate deductions or other incentives corporations use to dodge their duty to this country.

Furthermore, the income tax structure is based off of numbers from 30 years ago rather than wages today.  Income inequality and stagnating middle-class wages have caused the top 10% of Americans to have their incomes grow significantly while the bottom half of Americans live near or in poverty.  We must do better.  Reducing the number of tax brackets from 7 to 5 and redefining the brackets themselves to reflect today's reality is imperative to creating a fair tax system.  One in which those making a million or more per year in income pay their patriotic share back to the cities, states, and country that provided them with the opportunity to earn those high wages.

The Time To Act Has Come

Yet, I cannot do this alone.  Rep. Hollingsworth proved last time that he will spend however much of his own millions he needs to in order to win.  I am asking you to join me and help me raise enough money to get noticed by groups that are looking for winnable races.

The Indiana 9th is being targeted by multiple groups due to Rep. Hollingsworth's lack of support in the district, but it will take more than wanting to win this district.  I believe that my background and experiences make me uniquely qualified to connect to both the suburban and rural parts of this vast district, especially when compared to a man who voted himself a six-figure tax cut.  We can do this.  We can send one of Franklin Roosevelt's "Economic Royalists" back to his old job instead of enacting laws for himself and his rich friends.  Please donate to help end the corruption and apathy that runs rampant through the halls of Congress.

I have the political experience to win and make change on day one.  I have the passion to fight for you and for all Americans sick of what Washington does.  Join this campaign by donating, and you won't be disappointed by the results.

Thank you, and have a great day.

Change is A Comin'

Hey Everyone!

I'll be the first to admit.  Dan Canon has outraised us so far.  Yet!  YET!  I am not deterred, and you should not be either.  We are small but mighty.  This campaign has been taught by the best minds in Democratic politics on how to plan, how to run, and how to win.  He may have money for now, but we have experience.

Here is what I promise to you.

I will not quit on you.  I will not stop meeting people.  I will not stop going around the district.  I will not stop spreading the word of what we are doing and what we can do.

Here is what I need from you.

You've donated.  You've given generously, and you have my undying thanks for that.  I need you to spread this page and why you are supporting this campaign to your family, friends, and neighbors.

I have worked on campaigns for the last decade.  I have worked on campaigns that won and some that lost.  I know how to make a dollar stretch farther and wider in politics because of this experience.  We have a game plan to win in November 2018.  We know exactly how many voters to persuade.  We know largely where they are and how to get to them.  What we don't have is enough money.  It's the fuel to drive this campaign's engine and win the 9th.  I'm all in.  Join me.

Your Obedient Servant,

Tom K. Pappas
