To bring the American dream within reach of working families and to bridge the gap between the wealthiest individuals and the majority of Americans, we must ensure access to those rights which are fundamental to the prosperity of all Americans: a living wage, universal health care, improved access to daycare, greater investment in our public schools, affordable college tuition and vocational training, and the assurance that those who work the hardest can feed their families.   Americans, regardless of political affiliation, are concerned about saving enough for retirement and the futures of their children and grandchildren.  To ensure they have opportunities to succeed, affordable higher education without the crippling burden of debt and universal access to health care without exclusion is key to raising the bar for the majority of working families. And, with Americans living longer, we must ensure continued access and eligibility to social security.

Growing up as the oldest of seven kids in a family that lived below the poverty line, higher education was my best opportunity to make a better life and give back to the community.  Through a combination of government-funded loans, grants, scholarships, and part-time jobs, I received my college degree from Georgetown University.  After college, I joined the US Peace Corps in Russia and returned to California to receive my JD/MBA from UC Davis.  I later met my husband, Vincent, who is originally from Holland while I was backpacking and he was paragliding in Nepal.  We now live in beautiful Auburn.

Stemming the tide of global warming and greater reliance on renewable sources of energy are critical to protecting our planet as we know it and are necessary for our economic sustainability and security.  Sudden droughts and floods have resulted in mass migration of many in desperate circumstances throughout the world which leads to conflict and is the spawning ground for radicalization. To curb the damage to our world and security, I support the goals of the Paris Agreement, and the economic opportunities for continued expansion of renewal energy.  For every 1 job in coal, there are 5 jobs in solar.

Since the presidential election results last November, our constitutional rights and the freedoms envisioned by Roosevelt have been under siege.

Rather than presenting solutions to bridge income inequality, supporting renewable energy, and ensuring healthcare for all Americans, Trump has distracted his voter base with fear and hate, an age-old tactic used by demagogues to gain support while evading solutions to real problems.  Trump's order to ban individuals from predominantly Muslim countries, undermining the rights of members LGBTQ community, and summarily rounding up undocumented immigrants has instilled fear in communities and is an attack on our Constitution and our democratic values.  Our diversity is the fabric and strength of our nation.  We will not allow the new administration to break up families and extinguish the flame held by the Statute of Liberty.  We welcome refugees, and I support immigration reform and a path to citizenship for our DREAMers, their parents, and for many whose home is America.

In our fight to protect healthcare, the rights of working families, our civil rights, and our environment, we must stand united and reach across the aisles to pass legislation supporting these critical goals.  As a business attorney, I frequently negotiate with those who have competing interests to find solutions that meet our key objectives.

Will you join me in our fight for our country?  Let's take our nation back.

Trump's strategic timing of the racist, anti-Muslim tweet

Trump timed his racist and anti-Muslim tweet, once again shocking Americans and the world, to distract us from the horrific ramifications of the GOP tax bill for the majority of Americans.  We have seen Trump employ these distraction tactics time and again to divert the media's attention away from the impact of harmful legislation while reporting on his outrageous antics.

GOP strategist admits: Democrats more engaged for 2018 election

We can replicate the success of Virginia in California's District 1.  We need to personally engage voters in our district through phone calls and door knocking.  The results of the special elections throughout the country demonstrate that we can take this seat back in 2018!

Happy Thanksgiving

On this Thanksgiving Day, we are grateful to all of our supporters and volunteers for your hard work and sacrifice in our fight to restore our democracy, our civil rights, protection of our environment, and opportunities for all Americans.  If you ever ask yourself, what can one person do, we must only look to the example of Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Junior.  Our current political circumstances have demonstrated that more than vigilance is required.  We must act to ensure those rights which many Americans gave their lives for remain within our grasp and the values we cherish be our compass as we move our nation forward.  Thank you for joining me in this critical juncture for our country's future.

A wave of Republicans leaving office

A higher number of Republicans are resigning.  Strategic retirement occurs when incumbents think reelection is less likely.  Certain resignations were prompted by scandals, as in the case of Rep. Tim Murphy.

We have an opportunity to take back the house in 2018.  Let's make California's northeastern district one of the seats!

The proposed tax bill will not help Californians

This was my response to Doug LaMalfa's support for the tax bill:

"Doug, how can you claim this bill is "actually a tax cut for everyone but the wealthy"? The Tax Policy Center has determined that the tax plan would provide a massive windfall to the wealthy with minimal benefits to the middle class, if any, especially because we live in California, and because of the curtailment of the state and local tax deductions as well as the mortgage deduction. Why are you voting to hurt Californians when other Republicans in blue states have stated they will vote "No" on a tax bill that hurts their constituents? The other serious problem with these tax cuts is the increase in the national debt by at least another $1.5 trillion. The GOP budget proposal also proposes substantial cuts to Medicaid and Medicare which thousands in your district depend on. Effectively you are telling us that you prefer to give a tax cut to the rich and corporations rather than ensure your constituents have access to healthcare.

Rep. LaMalfa dismissed investigation as "load of crap"

Today I asked my opponent, Rep. Doug LaMalfa, the following on Facebook:

"Doug, you told the LA Times in August that you thought the allegations that the Trump campaign may have colluded with the Russians were, and I quote you, 'a bunch of crap...With all this time they’ve had to look at it, they still haven’t found anything they could put a finger on.' What is your response to the indictments of Manafort, Gates, and Papadopoulos, Trump's former campaign officials? Would you still claim the investigation is 'a bunch of crap'?"

Honored and Humbled by Kate Wanamaker's Letter to the Editor in the Union

I am honored that Kate Wanamaker wrote the following letter to the editor about my candidacy for Congress in The Union:

"Katharine Wanamaker: Jessica Holcombe the most qualified candidate
October 24, 2017

As the days pass we move closer and closer to our midterm elections. This election, like all elections, is an important one for both our county and congressional district.

We have a progressive and eager Democratic candidate fiercely looking to fill the seat of our current representative, Doug LaMalfa, and be the voice for us that he has not been. Jessica Holcombe is determined and focused; she will give LaMalfa a run for his money.

In my opinion, Jessica Holcombe is the most qualified and the strongest candidate. Jessica is a strong, self-made woman who has the drive and determination to replace LaMalfa. She knows how important it is to be the voice for all her constituents in Washington D.C. Jessica Holcombe knows rural California issues. Jessica will not back down, she will not be bought and will not let Washington ignore us. Jessica understands the importance of ensuring everyone earns a living wage and that working families are supported.

If you want something different. If you are sick of feeling like your voice isn't being heard. If you're tired of your representative continually going backwards not forwards, then Jessica Holcombe is a woman to get behind.

Proposed Tax Plan Primarily Benefits 1%; You and I will Likely Pay More Taxes

Trump's tax plan primarily benefits the top 1% of income earners; 30% of households which earn between $50k-$150k per year would actually see a tax increase; most households earning between $150,000-$300,000 would see a tax increase. However, if you earn $900,000 per year (most of us do not), you could save $200,000 per year on your taxes. Why does someone earning $900,000 per year need a tax break? Trump's tax plan does not benefit most Americans and will actually increase the deficit. What happened to the GOP's rhetoric about fiscal responsibility?

Universal Healthcare Takes Center Stage

ABC Good Morning America reported today that "[a] growing number of Democratic senators -– including several party power-players -- will stand with independent Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders Wednesday as co-sponsors to his latest bill for a government run, single-payer health care system."

The US remains the only developed country without universal healthcare for its citizens, though financial studies indicate national healthcare-for-all would actually save on services and pharmaceutical costs by eliminating the administrative fees, profit margins, marketing expenses, and executive salaries of private insurance companies.  In addition, a single-payer system would result in lower prices for healthcare and prescription medicine.

Universal healthcare will significantly alleviate the financial burden experienced by many middle class families when someone they love does not have coverage during an emergency and families must choose between paying a medical bill, refinancing their homes, or filing bankruptcy.  In addition, we would alleviate the rising costs of health insurance on businesses which would provide companies with greater flexibility to increase wages and offer additional benefits to their workers.  Let's make universal healthcare a reality for all Americans!

Supporting our Dreamers

Last Saturday, on the steps of Auburn's Courthouse, we rallied in support of our young Dreamers.  Whether our ancestors arrived here hundreds of years ago or we were born overseas and now call America home, our immigrants have built the nation we know today and continue to contribute immensely to our economy through their ingenuity, hard work, and perseverance.
