I am running for County Representative to make a difference in the lives of the residents, farmers, artisans, and entrepreneurs that have chosen this area as our home and to be a catalyst to help make sure that Otsego County and its residents can thrive economically without sacrificing the beauty and the lifestyle that we enjoy here. I want to make sure we have the tools and help we need to capitalize on the vast talent and resources of the county while protecting the environment and the close knit community that makes this area so special.

Our county desperately needs three things to help small business owners and farmers thrive, as well as to attract and keep people and businesses in the county:

- Universally available high speed broadband service

- Consistent cell phone connections

- Opportunities for farmers, artisans and entrepreneurs to get their goods to the markets that want them, including better transportation options.

As the Representative for Middlefield, Roseboom and Cherry Valley, I will work to make sure that we get the tools we need to thrive economically, as well as opportunities to highlight the farms, events, restaurants and activities that help showcase the beauty and talent of our part of the county.

Thank You!

Yesterday, my husband took me to the Adirondacks and we went hiking in the woods. I won’t lie; I needed to shake off the results of Tuesday night. I was so proud of the wave toward progress in our county and our country, especially the wave of women about to serve for the first time, and I was sad that I won’t be a part of it this time around.

My husband and I stopped when we saw this fallen tree in the lake, once seemingly dead, now the source of new life. That is how the last year has felt in politics. Some of the outcomes that have felt the worst have led to new life and invigoration to work for our values. Tuesday night, many of those new sprouts set down deeper roots.

So whether your candidate won or lost on Tuesday, stay engaged! Make a point of reaching out to your local government, your county rep, your town council, your mayor, and start a conversation. Ask them for specifics and timelines on the issues that are important to you. Hold them accountable, they will be better for it!

I am so grateful to everyone that got behind this campaign, and even those that didn’t  Thankful because they pushed me to work harder and make my case more clearly. I loved the chance to talk to so many people about the issues that matter to them. And I’m so proud of the Otsego Democrats that won their seats. I know how hard they will work to make our lives better!

With gratitude,

Leslie

October Updates and Activities

Thanks to everyone that has volunteered and contributed, I could not do this without you!

Here are some of the reasons that I am running:

We need a County Manager. If you had $110 million, you would have someone managing that money full-time. The people of this  County need and deserve the same! Plus, a County Manager more than pays for itself by facilitating County access to state and federal dollars.
We must solve the internet and cell phone issue in this district. We can not afford to keep kicking this can down the road. We are losing jobs, entrepreneurs, young people and opportunities because we lack the most basic infrastructure needed to be competitive. I've already been making calls and exploring options so that we can move forward on this quickly.
The current majority on the board has been dysfunctional. The unfortunate reality is that under Cathy Clark's leadership, our economic development agency has collapsed, we have had a major scandal involving the sheriff's department that adversely impacts public safety, we still don't have an ethics board seated, and we continue to spend money on studies of problems rather than solutions to problems.

There's no denying that our current representative is a nice guy. I like him. But he has had two years to make an impact on these issues, particularly as part of the majority party, and we have not seen the results we should be able to expect. I can't promise you that I will always be nice (sorry mom and dad!), I just feel too strongly about the urgency of these issues to be polite. If I'm elected, I will make sure that I spend my two years being productive and a strong voice for the citizens of our District and our County to get us the movement that we need and deserve on issues that are impacting our lives!

There are a bunch of happenings in October that I wanted to let you know about. If you can't make the organized events but would like to get some postcards, lawn signs or call lists, please email me at berliantleslie@gmail.com

Wednesday October 4th County Board Meeting, 10 am at the County Buildings on Main Street in Cooperstown

Thursday October 5th Compressed Natural Gas Truck Safety Meeting, 6:30 pm at the Richfield Springs Community Center at 6 Ann Street. This community meeting is being held to discuss safety issues concerning XNG compressed natural gas trucks traveling the roads of our county. XNG representatives have been invited to answer questions.

A huge thanks to everyone that donated to help maximize the contribution from Trailblazers PAC. Please let your friends and neighbors know that they can still double their impact if they donate by Monday, either online or by check (Committee to Elect Leslie Berliant 101 Hade Hollow Road Cooperstown, NY 13326)

The Goal is Within Reach!

Thanks to all of you, we have less than $1000 to raise by July 13th in order to reach of our first fundraising goal of $6000 by the end of the first reporting period (and the day I get to deliver the signatures for my candidacy). I am proud to share that I collected more than twice the number of signatures needed and heard from many voters around the district about the issues that concern them.

I am also thrilled that so many voters came out last week to share their concerns with the County Board about the Republican healthcare bill and stopped the Board from backing the Faso/Collins amendment which would have been a terrible decision. While it is true that we need to address the burden of property taxes in this county, the proposed resolution did not actually address the problem and instead, put at risk our largest employer and our most vulnerable friends and neighbors. The Board heard you and pulled the resolution before even holding a vote, that's how powerful your voices were! This was a big win for the people of this County!

Please help us reach this milestone goal by sharing our campaign with friends and family and asking them to contribute, every dollar helps us get our message out so that we can have a County Board that works for everyone!

My First Campaign Event

Thanks to the Cherry Valley Democratic Committee, I had my first campaign event today and it was SO MUCH FUN! Big thank you to the committee and to everyone that came to talk about their concerns and hopes for Otsego County.

On Wednesday, our County Board is voting on a resolution to support the politically motivated Faso/Collins amendment to Trumpcare. This reckless and cynical move may sound like it will alleviate the County tax burden, but in reality it will be financially devastating for our County and for our state. I plan to go and speak out against it. There is a saying that all politics are local. The reverse is true, too. All local politics are national. If you live in Otsego County but can't attend the meeting, please email your comments to berliantleslie@gmail.com and I will read them at the meeting on your behalf.

Thanks to all of you, we are only $1800 from our online fundraising goal! Please help spread the word that local elections matter and need support!

If you want to join my mailing list and keep up with what's happening with the campaign, please go to http://eepurl.com/cUIgwz

A huge thanks to each and every one of you!

WOW! I am overwhelmed!

I am so filled with gratitude to all the people that have endorsed, volunteered, contributed financially and surrounded me with well wishes! A special thank you to my political family at Code Blue and the incredible community of Pantsuit Nation who have been such an enormous source of support in every way. I am emotionally overwhelmed at the response to my post on PSN last night and the amount of love and support I received in response!

I just came from the monthly County Board meeting and it is clear that if we want to fix the most basic issues of this County - the lack of broadband and cell service, the disturbing lack of action on bringing County employee salaries even to the rural average rather than remaining up to 25% below, the desperate need for a County Executive or Manager - we need to elect folks that will put the people's business first. I hope to be one of those Representatives and to make all of you proud!

With tremendous gratitude,

Leslie
