On November 16, U.S. Representative David Young voted for the passage of the GOP tax law, which funds tax cuts for corporations and millionaires by raising taxes on 20 million middle class families. Young once again went after Iowans' health care, voting to slash $25 billion from Medicare in 2018. It's estimated that the state of Iowa will lose $225 million from its Medicare because of this law.

Since the majority of District 3, considered "vulnerable" for Republicans, we cannot afford to wait for the 2018 campaign season. Mr. Young is already trying to shape the conversation on the tax law.  We want to remind people why the bill was so unpopular at the time of its passage: 83% of the tax law's benefits go to corporations and the wealthiest 1% of Americans.

We are now fundraising for a billboard about Young's Tax Scam vote in a high traffic location in Des Moines: directly across from the airport. If we exceed our goal, any excess funds would be used toward a social media advertising campaign with the same messaging.

You might remember Mr. Young from his deciding vote on May 5 that passed the Affordable Health Care Act (AHCA) through the U.S. House of Representatives, going back on his promises to protect people with pre-existing conditions in the district. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, in June-July, we placed a billboard about the AHCA vote just one block from his office in Des Moines. In July, the Des Moines Register spotlighted our efforts as an example of the good things that Democrats can do. You can read the article here.

Donors will not be charged unless we meet our goal. The billboard company with whom we have gotten quotes are waiting for us to confirm, at which point we can determine a location. As soon as we hit our minimum, we will contract with them.

UPDATE: We have reached our goal! Thank you to all our amazing donors. Any donations beyond our minimum will allow us to keep the billboard up longer, or will go toward our get-out-the-vote efforts.

Contributions will be used in connection with a federal election and are subject to the limitations and prohibitions of the Federal Election Campaign Act 102.5(a)(2)(ii) and (iii). Federal law requires us to use our best efforts to collect and report the name, mailing address, occupation and name of employer of individuals whose contributions exceed $200 in a calendar year.

FAQ

  • Why is Iowa District 3 “vulnerable”?

Iowa District 3 is considered a “vulnerable” district for Republicans. Trump won with less than 50% of the vote (Trump won 49% to 45% in the district).  Representative David Young is listed as by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee as a “round one” target. The district voted for Obama in 2008 and 2012. Voter registrations are fairly evenly split in the district, though Republicans have a 10,000 person advantage as of January 2017. (Democrats, including our group, are already organizing to decrease that advantage.)

  • Who is running this campaign?

Northwest Des Moines Democrats is a group of citizen activists that has been in existence for eight years. In 2017, we formed a statewide PAC and a federal nonconnected committee PAC. Our goal is to inform voters in our district. Our membership comprises of citizen activists and volunteers. We do activism in our free time—no one is paid. That means that every cent you donate will go to the cost of putting up the billboard(s). We are fundraising offline as well, so the goal of $1500 might be lowered depending on those efforts.

  • What will the billboard say?

The first billboard read:

Congressman David Young voted to end protection for 343,000 constituents with pre-existing conditions.

VOTE YOUNG OUT.

This ad was paid for by the Northwest Des Moines Democrats PAC (www.facebook.com/NWDMdems) and not authorized by any candidate or candidate’s committee.

We are currently determining the wording for the second billboard, but here are some options:

  • Congressman David Young voted to give 83% of tax benefits to the 1%.
  • Congressman David Young voted to cut $25 billion from Medicare in 2018, including a $225 million cut for Iowa.
  • Congressman David Young thinks corporations and the 1% deserve a bigger tax break than you.
  • Congressman David Young voted to increase taxes for 36 million middle class families.

We did it!

Thanks to the generosity of amazing donors like you, we have reached the fundraising goal for Northwest Des Moines Democrats' second billboard about Representative David Young's horrible voting record.

When the billboard goes up, we will inform thousands of voters in Iowa's third congressional district about Mr. Young's "yes" vote for the unpopular Trump Tax law. Young voted to add trillions to our deficit in order to give huge tax breaks to corporations and the same wealthy donors who fund his campaigns. (Only .34% of Young's campaign donations are from donors who gave $200 or less.)

Iowans don't like the Trump Tax law and didn't think Mr. Young should vote for it. Iowa District 3 needs a congressperson who will make the economy better for hardworking Iowans--not CEOs and special interests. Because of your donation, we'll be able to remind thousands of Iowans why they need to vote Young out of office this year.

It will take us some time to make final arrangements, but we hope to have the billboard up ASAP. We hope it will be located across from the Des Moines International Airport.  Updates will be posted here and at our Facebook page, www.facebook.com/NWDMdems, as we get them.

Again, thank you for your donation. We sincerely appreciate it.

Offline fundraising

Hello, all!

We raised a few hundred dollars offline for the second billboard, so we have decreased our total goal to $1270. When our first billboard goes up near Mr. Young's office (hopefully some time during the week of 6/5), we will be doing a big social media push that we hope will allow us to meet our goal for billboard #2.
