Hi, my name is Kevin Barnet, and I've been a resident of Wooster, Ohio for the last 11 years. My family moved here from NY to open and run a Bed and Breakfast. After we sold the business we decided to stay in Wayne county.
I've always been interested in politics, but it wasn't until this election that I felt I could no longer sit on the sidelines and take a passive stance. I started by getting involved with the Women's March on Washington on January 21st. My wife and younger daughter traveled to Washington to march, while my older daughter marched in Chicago and my son attended a rally in Lafayette, Indiana. I marched here in Wooster and I was touched and invigorated to see so many people united and standing up for basic human and women's rights.
I am running on 3 core principles or issues and they are:
Issue One: Health Care
I believe that quality, affordable, health care should be a right, not just a privilege for the rich. No parent or loved one of a child or family member should ever be denied coverage for a procedure or treatment due to their economic situation. I will work towards those goals, and will oppose all restrictions that slashes coverage, tries to privatize or singles out and taxes the elderly and less healthy among us.
Issue Two: Labor Equality
As Democrats we need to re-commit to the working lower- and middle-income. I'm of the opinion that keeping Ohio a free bargaining state is a key to that end. As someone who has benefited from working in a union, I know Right to Work legislation is bad for working Ohio families regardless of whether they work for a union or not. I will fight for pay equality, a true living wage, and workers' right to unionize. There is no such thing as the benevolent company that cares about their employees' financial situation. They're in business to make money for the owners or stock-holders. All the gains we have ever seen for workers have come from collective bargaining or legislation. I will fight to support and advance that cause.
Issue Three: Social Justice
Since becoming very active, while meeting and talking with people, I am shocked and appalled to find out that some people are afraid to stand up for the social issues they believe in. Women's rights, LGBTQ rights, immigration, the environment, or the privatizing of our school system. These are all issues on which we should never be afraid to express our opinions. I will lend my voice to the voiceless, to those who feel disenfranchised, because fairness and dignity should be the bedrock of our society.
That's why I decided I wanted to run for Ohio Legislature, District 1 House of Representatives seat in 2018. With your support I will work tirelessly for the people of my district and Ohio.
