Effective policing must address the causes of crime and set long term goals that have the best interests of the people in mind. The Civilian Led Policing organization aims to make that a reality by implementing the Civilian Led Policing model proposed by former Baltimore Police Commander Michael Wood Jr. In order to do this, they have already started to build networks across the country, introducing the model to people and building the infrastructure needed for implementation. In the next few months, Civilian Led Policing staff and volunteers will be traveling to cities all across the country to help local organizers figure out how they can implement this model. With your help, they will be able to hire the staff they need to succeed and to pay for other expenses such as travel costs.

What is the Civilian Led Policing Model?

The Civilian Led Policing model is based around independent, civilian commissions which are chosen via a lottery system with equitable representation. The civilian commissions give the public safety commissioner direction with policy standards and best practices. They will take a holistic approach to pull ideas from many disciplines in order to actualize the long term best interests of the community. “I support Civilian Led Policing because it is the smart thing to do as a civilian for civilians.”

  • Austin Spillar endorsed

“Civilian Led Policing provides a scientific approach, allowing communities the ability to implement their ideas and set policing policies. Plus, it provides a longterm solution to reducing crime by calling for more investment in human rights. It also addresses lead as a cause of crime. This model is very thorough.”

“We need a change in our policing in order to end the needless violence and actually have the police serve and protect our communities.”

“How else can we solve the problems that have lasted through society for decades? We must as a nation stand together and decide how our police department operates. I believe that this is the way”

“Has a black male in America my community is disproportionately adversely affected buy policing in America. I feel a community-led police force is the only way we can truly reform how we are policed in America. Police departments should ask us the people how we want to be policed not the other way around. For these reasons I decided to donate money to community-led policing.”

“The United States puts more people in prison than some of the worst dictatorships in history. We cannot continue to pretend to be a democracy without radically transforming the way policing works in the United States.”

Updates on the Organization

Thank you to everyone who has been following along and supporting our fight to implement the Civilian Led Policing model! We are very happy with our progress thus far and we look forward to the rest of our tour stops this summer!

As of right now, we have multiple cities that are showing promise. Miami, Austin, and Albuquerque all have taken the initial steps to go towards implementation. Just recently during our Albuquerque stop, one of our volunteers got a space at a public library for us to hold a public meeting. Now we are mobilizing a growing group of volunteers there who are passionate about transforming their city! In Miami we have both a candidate with this on their platform, Daniel Suarez, and a team working with Daniel to write the legislation for a referendum. In Austin we have began to connect with local organizations who will work with us to pass a referendum, along with a candidate for TX State Senate, Steven Kling, who has put this on his platform.

In addition to Albuquerque, we have had numerous other successful stops! In Seattle we met with City Council candidate Jon Grant to discuss the model and talk about his belief that recent reforms hadn't gone far enough in Seattle. We also met with several other local organizers who have given us connections across the US. We have also met with local activists in Las Vegas and Phoenix who may help us lay the foundation in those cities.

To our excitement, we have began to start organizing volunteers both at the national and local level. We look forward to building more of the volunteer teams we have planned!

If you haven't already, be sure to find us on social media - @CivilianLedPD so you can keep up with all that we are doing! Thank you once again for your support!

“Because this is very important...being a black Man in America I have to often experienced these destructive policing practices but it's not about me.i believe these current police practices and abuses in combination with racist policies like the "war on drugs " "stop and frisk " is the single greatest cause for the division and destruction of the African American families before the war AA Families led the country in two parent homes in the late 60's but now only 31% of black children have a two parent households.. that's unacceptable... I don't have much money but I can be a voice to promote and raise awareness and unite blacks who never vote to stand with us and vote... can you help me do that, so I can help you with that???#Each1reach1”
