America was to be the great experiment that was a Republic for the people, by the people, but somewhere we got lost.
Since this country's founding, Americans have fought and died so that all people could have EQUAL rights, EQUAL voices, and EQUAL justice. As a nation, we declared that all people were created equally and endowed by their creator with unalienable rights, regardless of their gender, race, national origin, ethnicity, spiritual views, sexual orientation, or political beliefs.
I’m running for Congress because something needs to change before it's too late for the 4th District and our nation to recover. I have watched as our education programs for children from low-income and minority families has deteriorated, as voting rights have been stripped from citizens, as funding for public defenders has decreased, as being poor has become the determining factor as to whether one will have a criminal record, as people are killed in the streets and others find ways to blame the victim, as women's access to abortions have been increasingly limited, as the civil rights of those who are labeled as "others" have been trampled, and I have decided that something has to change. We cannot succeed as a nation if we allow our most vulnerable citizens to fall victim to a system of injustices. A chain is only as strong as it's weakest link. A veteran sleeping on the street, a generation of children who cannot pass a college placement exam, a senior citizen forced to choose which medication she needs the most, a full-time employee who can't keep the lights on, these are our weak links. They are the reason that I am running, their voices and struggles need to be heard, and their cries for help recognized.
The 4th District has not been represented with an equal voice in Congress and I want to give you back what so many have fought and died for. You deserve someone that listens and understands your struggles – the struggle to care for your family, the struggle to pay off debt, the struggle to plan for retirement, the struggle for civil rights, the struggle to afford college, the struggle to give your child a quality public school education, and the struggle to achieve the American dream; but also someone who will fight to ensure that your concerns are addressed and resolved.
As a Naval Reservist, a law school graduate, and a Presidential Volunteer Service Award recipient, I have demonstrated my dedication to serving our nation and our community and now I want to serve you. I want to give a voice to you, the people, who's voices have been silenced and needs ignored for too long. We need to let them see that we, the people, want our nation back!
They have told us that change takes time and to just wait a little longer. The time for waiting has come to an end, we must act before it's too late. This is our future. This is our District. This is our Maryland. Our time is now.
