The upcoming election in 2018 marks a critical time for Tennessee state government. Currently, Republicans hold a super-majority in the Tennessee House of Representatives (74 seats out of 99).  I do not begrudge Republicans their majority, but a super-majority by any party removes the important necessity of debating competing ideas in a public forum.

We must elect more Democrats and Independents to the state legislature prior to the 2020 national census. That's when required statewide redistricting takes place. Without anything to restrict them, Republicans will likely "gerrymander" the districts again to insure that they remain in power.

The Republican incumbent in District 26, Gerald McCormick, has been in office since 2004. By the next election, in 2018, he will have been in office for fourteen years. That is way too long.

He has become the classic "entrenched" incumbent. An overwhelming majority of his campaign contributions in the last election, in 2016 - when he was unopposed, came from PACs. He now is beholden to special interests rather than representing the citizens and businesses of District 26.

Why elect me?

I offer an extensive background in the Chattanooga small business community. In addition to owning several businesses, I was a commercial lender for many years, helping dozens of small businesses borrow money. I was Chief Financial Officer of a 75-employee manufacturing business from 2002 to 2006. I have an MBA from Louisiana State University-Shreveport.

I have deep roots in Chattanooga and District 26. I was born at Memorial Hospital in 1954. I attended Chattanooga public schools and graduated from Chattanooga High School in 1972. I am a graduate of U.T.C. I have lived in the district most of my life.

I will be new to government, but not new to public service. I am a former board member of the Downtown YMCA, North Chattanooga Chamber of Commerce, Volunteer Community School, Fortwood Mental Health Center, Jobs Plus of Chattanooga, Southeast Community Capital, 28th Legislative District CDC, and the North Chattanooga Neighborhood Association.

I will serve only two terms (four years) - to get us through the next redistricting. I will be "unentrenchable."

How can you help (even if you don't live in District 26)?

You can help immediately by making a financial pledge, endorsing me, or both - elsewhere on this page. You can also help by spreading the word about my campaign and, when the time comes, placing a yard sign on your property. And, of course, if you live in District 26, you can vote for me in 2018.

I hope to earn your support.

Best regards,

David Jones

Change in Campaign Plan

Dear All Early Contributors and Supporters,

I now have access to professional advice for our campaign and they advise me that, although I get creativity points for my $75,000 threshold pledge, we can not run a winning campaign if we don't begin spending at least a little money now. So, in order to keep my pledge to you and, at the same time, get the flexibility I need for paying expenses, I will reserve the funds that have been contributed by you as of today's date, November 29, 2017, which I show as $6,182. However, all contributions received after today's date will be accepted as general funds that may be used (with care) to pay campaign expenses going forward.

Thank you so much for your support so far. Going forward, since we now have a bank account (and will shortly have capability to process credit card transactions), I suggest that you make future contributions directly to the campaign rather than going through Crowdpac, as follows: VOTE DAVID JONES, P.O. Candidate's Campaign Message

As your State Representative I will focus relentlessly on issues that have a direct and positive impact on you and solutions that make us all healthier, wealthier, and more secure.

I’ve been fortunate to get a somewhat unique view of our economy. I have been a worker at businesses both large and small, at for-profits and not-for-profits.

I was a commercial lender for ten years where I saw inside dozens of businesses - how they work, and how they don’t work.

I was once Chief Financial Officer of a 75-employee manufacturing business where I saw the deep workings of one specific business - how it worked, and how it didn’t work.

I have owned businesses myself - where I risked my own money and saw how my own efforts worked, or didn’t work.

As an observer in those different work environments, I have learned, what I believe, are some universal lessons in our fast-changing society…

·      Our students and workers must commit passionately and continuously to improving their own skills, capabilities, and knowledge;

·      Our businesses must continually make smart investments in technology and human capital, while paying workers a fair wage for a fair day’s work;

·      Our government must regulate fairly and consistently, and invest our tax dollars wisely so that we have high-performing schools, safe neighborhoods, and access to affordable healthcare for all.

I have deep roots in District 26. I’ve lived in our district for almost 60 years. I went to public schools in the district. With my wide experience working with small businesses, and with our combined talents, energy and commitment, we can do this. WE. CAN. DO. THIS.

Campaign Update

Hi Folks.

I have been busy meeting individually with various community leaders for the past month or so and will continue to do that for the remainder of the year. One of the folks I met, who has experience with winning campaigns, advised me recently to not worry about fund raising so much at this early date, but to focus on getting people energized about the campaign. If we get people enthused, the money will inevitably follow, he said. So, please continue to tell your friends about this campaign.

I have now been given access to the state party's campaign database and have been exploring the "likely voter" population in District 26. This population, which is the most important, is much more favorable to us than the "registered voter" group. I am convinced now, more than ever, that we can win this.

I am still, basically, performing all campaign activities myself to save money. As you may recall, I pledged not to spend any contributors' money until we get to $75,000 in commitments. There is not much of a requirement for funds yet, but that will start changing after the first of the year. So, if you will, please stay mindful of opportunities to get others to contribute. I will need money eventually.

I am extremely pleased with our progress to date. Thanks so much for your support.

-David

Our goal is now $75,000

And in a totally counter-intuitive move...  I have raised the fund-raising goal on our crowdpac.com page from $10,000 to $75,000. That means no one's financial pledge becomes real until we reach $75,000 in commitments. It is my understanding that it could easily take $150,000 to beat Gerald McCormick. $75,000 would get us 50% there. When we get there, it means we are viable. I am not going to spend anyone's money until we are viable. So, tell your like-minded friends that they can make financial pledges with abandon; they won't have to pay up until we get to $75k. At that point, we will be able to make a difference. And that is when we can get Gerald McCormick to engage with us. It makes no sense for him to acknowledge our presence now. He will ignore us until we pose a threat.

Permission to publicize

Dear Supporters, I am preparing to send out a letter to a few dozen folks who I think might be amenable to making a financial pledge and/or endorsement to the campaign. I might like to list my contributors so far (I will leave off the amount) and also show the endorsements received so far. Can you let me know in the next day or so if you have a problem with that?
