Texas Primary Election Day is March 6, 2018...VOTE for YOU!!

As the 1st Latina running for the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate in Texas History, I have faced challenges along the way. Running for office was never my plan, I'm a married, mother of four boys, volunteer baseball coach, nonprofit founder, community organizer and activist. After 32 years of tough life experiences that one can't ever imagine, I decided "Enough was enough." If our children and future generation are going to have a chance at a life, a meaningful life, we must rise up for them while we still can.

On election day, March 6, 2018, as much as I want you to vote for me, I want you to cast your vote for YOU. Vote for someone who will represent YOU without compromising YOUR life for profit.

I want you to remember this: Millionaires career politicians do not represent the working class, everyday people like me and you. Millionaire career politicians will compromise our lives because they are not affected by the laws they impose upon us. Also, political experience means nothing, especially when career politicians use elected office to enrich themselves.

I fully support:

  • Nonprofit Universal Single Payer Healthcare
  • Raising the Federal Minimum Wage to a Living Wage of $15/hr
  • Renewable Energy
  • Strengthening the EPA
  • Tuition Free College
  • Automatic Voter Registration
  • Expanding Voting Rights
  • Immigration Reform with a Pathway to Citizenship
  • Ending the Wars
  • Indigenous Rights and Honoring the Treaties
  • Legalizing Marijuana for Medical and Recreational Use
  • Funding Public Education
  • Ending Private Prisons
  • Social and Criminal Justice Reform

The platform is long, but what do you expect when so much has been taken form us. We have much work to do going forward.

I need you to Get Out There and VOTE, our lives and future generations depend on YOUR VOTE! - Sema Hernandez for U.S. Senate

Proposal for Gun Legislation

Gun control is a very important issue for gun owners and more importantly the safety of families especially the most vulnerable, our children. In a perfect world we wouldn't be at war &/or have school shootings. We are discussing different ways to approach this issue without violating the 2nd Amendment as it is interpreted.

Here are some solutions that we have come up with are:

1.) Raising the age to buy guns to 21 years old.

2.) Require Background Checks, Mental Health Screening and Gun Safety Certification Classes through a Gun Insurance Program in order to qualify for a gun license.

3.) Prohibit gun license and gun purchase to people with a history of violence and/or abuse.

4.) Ban the sell of Bump Stocks and Semi-Automatic Weapons to civilians.

5.) Extending wait times for gun purchase.

I have been approached with the idea of a Buy Back Program like the one in Australia, but not all gun owners will not want to give up their guns. Perhaps proposing gun laws that could grandfather certain guns will is a viable idea but it s in the works. I don't have all the answers or solutions and I appreciate your suggestions to reach a solution to end gun violence and gun related school massacres.- Sema Hernandez

Debate for U.S. Senate Primary Race to Unseat Ted Cruz

February 17, 2018

Hello,

Sema Hernandez is a Democrat running for the U.S. Senate seat for Texas, which currently is held by Ted Cruz.  She is challenging her primary opponents, Robert Francis "Beto" O'Rourke and Edward Kimbrough, to a televised public debate on February 21, 2018. Beto O'Rourke has refused previous personal invitations to debate Sema Hernandez. Sema Hernandez is hosting the debate in Houston, Texas. The debate will be live streamed and links will be provided.

SEMA FOR U.S. SENATE - PRIMARY DEBATE

“ACCOUNTABILITY TO TEXANS IN THE RACE FOR THE SENATE”

* * * UPDATE * * *

HOUSTON, Texas -- Sema Hernandez, Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate, will host a debate for the Democratic nomination on Wednesday, February 21, 2018 at 3487 Cullen Blvd, Houston, TX 77004

The conditions for working Texas families have failed to improve through the actions taken by Congress.  Sema Hernandez calls upon all candidates running to represent Texas in the U.S. Senate to be accountable to Texas voters in an open debate on the issues facing our state.  The candidates on the 2018 ballot for the Democratic primary are:

Sema Hernandez (D)

Robert “Beto” O'Rourke (D)

Edward Kimbrough (D)

Candidates were given until February 17, 2018 12:00 pm CST to respond to the request for a debate. Candidates Edward Kimbrough (D) and Sema Hernandez (D) will participate in the  debate.  O’Rourke’s campaign did not accept or decline by the deadline, despite a promise from the campaign on February 13 to do so. This is the second time that O’Rourke promised a debate with his primary opponents, as evidenced from this video posted December 17, 2017:

TEXANS RECLAIMING OUR VOICE IN THE U.S. SENATE

HOUSTON, Texas — Sema Hernandez, Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate, will be hosting a press conference and protest at the Leonel Castillo Community Center (2101 South Street, Houston) at 11 AM on Friday, December 1, 2017.

The event will highlight the Senator’s support for the Republican tax bill, which will slash taxes for the wealthiest individuals and corporations in America while raising taxes for the working poor and middle class, further aggravating our nation’s crisis of income and wealth inequality. While millions of Texans are still suffering from the aftereffects of Hurricane Harvey, Senator Cruz will be inside the Community Center raising money for his reelection instead of attending to their needs.

Ms. Hernandez is a progressive supporter of Senator Bernie Sanders and a proud member of the  Houston chapter of  Democratic Socialists for America. The daughter of immigrants, she knows firsthand the effects of Trump’s inhumane deportation policies and cancellation of the DACA program on our families and communities, and will fight for a fair and humanitarian program of immigration reform.

After Hurricane Harvey

Hello Everyone,

Millions of people were affected by Hurricane Harvey in Texas. My family & I were fortunate to have survived. We have much to rebuild after the devastation we are left with.

I would like to share what happened Aug 26, 2017 around 1a.m. during Hurricane Harvey.

My husband & I rescued our neighbors from their home as water was rising in our street.

I got a phone call from our neighbor at 1:12am asking if they can come to our house since our house is higher than theirs & not in ft of water.
I said yes.

She explained 3ft water came into their home & everything was floating. Her grandchildren where terrified & wet. I can hear the shock & fear in her voice.

I told her not to leave her house until we got there, the water in the street might have a current & could carry her & grandchildren away.

My husband & I put on our shoes & rain jacket & headed out. It was dark & pouring rain with occasional lightning.

We walked along our neighbors homes where the water was lower. As we got closer to our neighbors house that needed rescue, we walked into really deep water.

She was holding her 3yr old grandson in her arms. He was in his underwear, cold & wet from rain. Her 14yr old grandson & his friend were anxious to leave & wanted to cross the street.

I yelled, "No...the water is high & there might be a current". My husband said we needed to hurry because of the risk of lightning striking us.

I could feel the grass beneath my feet, the water was about 4ft deep.
Another few steps & then the sidewalk beneath my feet. The water was 4 1/2 ft deep.
I took that step into the street & the water was up to my neck. The water was cold & still raining.

I didn't feel like I was slipping so I told my neighbor to carefully cross & hold on to her grandson.

We are standing in the middle of the street, I reached over & pulled her hand to get them closer.

I took her grandson & handed him over to my husband to cover him up in his rain jacket & keep him warm.

We got our neighbor & up to higher ground. I told my husband to please get them home I will follow after getting her other grandson & his friend across the street.

Our neighbors husband, an Air Force Veteran, didn't want to leave. He decided to stay in his home with their older son.

Once we got back you our house, dried up & changed our clothes, we got a phone call from her husband. He decided to leave his house after all. We waited for him on our porch that had 3 ft of water & rising, but he never showed up.

I asked his wife to please call him again to see if he left his house. After many calls & no answer, I ran into the rain & darkness. As I got closer to his house I yelled his name & I began to worry. I yelled his name & I saw things in the water floating...my heart was breaking as thoughts filled my head of him getting swept away.

I got to the street & I felt the water beginning flow. The water was up to my ears, I decided to swim a cross the street. I got across & I felt the grass on my knees & I stood up.

I opened his front door & yelled his name several times. Only this time he said "I'm over here!!".

I was relieved to hear his voice. I held his hand tight & we got out of there as fast as we could. The water was so high he was hesitant to cross the high water. We made it through the water & made it back to my home.

We stayed up to keep watch as the water was rising in our home. My husband, our 4 boys, our neighbors, my cousin & her son. A total of 12 people in the only 2 bedrooms that didn't flood. Then our roof began to leak.

We assessed the damages & we know the rebuilding is going to take a while. This hurricane exposed how unprepared we were for major flooding. So many people are still without a place to live & have not been helped.

Hurricane Harvey has set back our campaign but we will keep going. We need to help many people rebuild.
