I am one of two candidates in the June 5, 2018 Successor Election to replace Judge Aaron Persky if he is recalled in that same election.  I have a proven track record for having well-served Santa Clara County residents for 23 years.  I will bring a wealth of experience and wide perspective to the Santa Clara County bench.  I will be a judge who reflects the values of the community I serve.

I am a graduate of Stanford University and UCLA Law School.  I worked as a civil trial attorney for five years before being sworn in as a Deputy District Attorney.  As a 23-year prosecutor I have served as a line deputy and in management.

I have advocated strongly for victims, and I have been equally committed to safeguarding the rights of the accused. I grew up in a multi-racial family of 13 that has informed my views on bias of all kinds. I will be a fair, hard-working judge with a continued devotion to all residents of Santa Clara County.

My Story

I grew up as the daughter of two public servants who raised eleven children, six biological and five adopted.  The task wasn't always easy either socially or financially given the large number of children and the cultural norms in Alexandria, Virginia in the 1960's and 70's.  So I grew accustomed at an early age to the idea that doing the right thing is more important than being liked or comfortable, and that serving others is the highest calling.

In law school I was the president of the student board for El Centro, an organization that provided pro bono legal assistance to indigent clients.  I had clerkships with attorney Johnnie L. Cochran Jr., a civil litigation firm, and with the U.S. Attorney's Office in San Francisco.  After law school I returned to the Bay Area to work for Thornton Taylor and Downs, a mid-size civil litigation firm in San Francisco.

In 1994 a civil case on which I was working brought me to the attention of the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office.  District Attorney George Kennedy hired me in May 1995.  The District Attorney's Office has honored me with two of the three awards the Office announces each year for attorneys: the Robert Webb Award for Misdemeanor Trial Advocacy, and the Clay Haupert Award for Excellence.  In 2011 I was promoted to the role of Supervising Deputy District Attorney, and in 2015 District Attorney Jeff Rosen selected me to serve as one of his six Assistant District Attorneys.

For over two decades, I have been a strong advocate for the most vulnerable victims in our society: elders, dependent adults, children, and domestic violence and sexual assault victims.  In 1999, I helped launch the Santa Clara County Financial Abuse Specialist Team.  My work on the elder fraud unit helped elders recover or preserve millions of dollars worth of homes and life savings, and has sent con artists to prison.  I currently chair the Elder Death Review Team.  My work on the sexual assault team led to the imprisonment of numerous child molesters and rapists for life.  I have worked on hundreds of domestic violence cases and currently chair the Domestic Violence Death Review Team.  In 2015, I spearheaded the creation of a San Jose Family Justice Center where victims of domestic violence can receive comprehensive services.

Throughout my career as a prosecutor, I have remained vigilant about protecting defendants' rights and the integrity of the criminal justice system.  I have a deep understanding of and respect for a prosecutor's obligation to safeguard the rights of suspects and defendants.  I will be a judge who recognizes both the value of rehabilitation and the need for incarceration in certain circumstances.

In my role as an Assistant District Attorney, I have worked to support programs aimed at strengthening families and providing support for at-risk youth to keep them from becoming system-involved.  I have represented the District Attorney on commissions and work groups aimed at reforming the jail and pretrial release system.  I recognize that public safety is more enduringly safeguarded not just by prosecuting those who have committed crimes, but by working with people and communities to create hope and opportunities.

Informing my views on all of these issues and further shaping the type of judge I will be is my background as one of eleven children in a family that includes brothers and sisters who are African American, Vietnamese, and Korean.  We represent not only different races but also different religions, sexual orientations and gender identities.  So I not only embrace the diversity of Santa Clara County, I have a personal interest in ensuring that the justice system is fair for all individuals.

My Message

Santa Clara County needs judges who reflect the values of the community.  There needs to be no doubt that the laws apply fairly to all.  In my courtroom, everyone will feel respected and heard.

My professional background will enable  me to hit the ground running.  The courtroom is a place I appeared regularly for 25 years.  The diversity in my personal background which has expanded my lens, and my lengthy experience working with the judicial system and in the community will enable me to judge wisely.

A vote for me is a vote for justice for all in Santa Clara County.

“I've done a lot of research and asked opinions of many learned people on whether or not I should vote to remove Judge Persky, and if so, who would be the best candidate to replace him. I've concluded that yes, it's appropriate to remove Judge Persky and I don't make that decision lightly or easily, as judges must be allowed to do their job unless there have been some grievous and negligent decisions. I also strongly now believe that Cindy Seeley Hendrickson is the right choice to replace Persky, and she will have my vote.”

Palo Alto Daily Post Endorses Cindy Hendrickson For Judge

Thank you Palo Alto Daily Post for recognizing my record and endorsing me for Superior Court Judge of Santa Clara County.

“As a prosecutor for 22 years, Hendrickson has more courtroom experience than most attorneys will have in their careers. We doubt there would be anything that could surprise her. Residents are sometimes concerned that a judge who comes from the D.A.’s office would have a pro-prosecution bent when ruling on cases. But looking at her record, she hasn’t been a prosecutor who wants to win at all costs. For her, it’s been more important to obtain a just outcome, which often means negotiating with the defense for a resolution that fits the crime. And she’s been willing to drop a case when it’s obvious the defendant isn’t guilty.

We recommend Hendrickson based on her experience and track record.”
