My candidacy gives the people of Santa Clara County a choice.  A choice over whether Judge Aaron Persky continues to serve in their judiciary.  A meaningful choice requires a strong alternative.  I am highly qualified to serve Santa Clara County as a Superior Court Judge.

I am a graduate of Stanford University and UCLA Law School.  I worked as a civil litigator for five years before being sworn in as a Deputy District Attorney.  As a 22-year prosecutor I have served as a line deputy and in management.

I have advocated strongly for victims, and I have been equally committed to safeguarding the rights of the accused. I grew up in a multi-racial family of 13 that has informed my views on bias of all kinds. I will be a fair, hard-working judge with a continued devotion to all residents of Santa Clara County.

My Story

I grew up as the daughter of two public servants who raised eleven children, six biological and five adopted.  The task wasn't always easy either socially or financially given the large number of children and the cultural norms in Alexandria, Virginia in the 1960's and 70's.  So I grew accustomed at an early age to the idea that doing the right thing is more important than being liked or comfortable, and that serving others is the highest calling.

In law school I was the president of the student board for El Centro, an organization that provided pro bono legal assistance to indigent clients.  I had clerkships with attorney Johnnie L. Cochran Jr., a civil litigation firm, and with the U.S. Attorney's Office in San Francisco.  After law school I returned to the Bay Area to work for Thornton Taylor and Downs, a mid-size civil litigation firm in San Francisco.

In 1994 a civil case on which I was working brought me to the attention of the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office.  District Attorney George Kennedy hired me in May 1995.  The District Attorney's Office has honored me with two of the three awards the Office announces each year for attorneys: the Robert Webb Award for Misdemeanor Trial Advocacy, and the Clay Haupert Award for Excellence.  In 2011 I was promoted to the role of Supervising Deputy District Attorney, and in 2015 District Attorney Jeff Rosen selected me to serve as one of his six Assistant District Attorneys.

For over two decades, I have been a strong advocate for the most vulnerable victims in our society: elders, dependent adults, children, and domestic violence and sexual assault victims.  In 1999, I helped launch the Santa Clara County Financial Abuse Specialist Team.  My work on the elder fraud unit helped elders recover or preserve millions of dollars worth of homes and life savings, and has sent con artists to prison.  I currently chair the Elder Death Review Team.  My work on the sexual assault team led to the imprisonment of numerous child molesters and rapists for life.  I have worked on hundreds of domestic violence cases and currently chair the Domestic Violence Death Review Team.  In 2015, I spearheaded the creation of a San Jose Family Justice Center where victims of domestic violence can receive comprehensive services.

Throughout my career as a prosecutor, I have remained vigilant about protecting defendants' rights and the integrity of the criminal justice system.  I have a deep understanding of and respect for a prosecutor's obligation to safeguard the rights of suspects and defendants.  I will be a judge who recognizes both the value of rehabilitation and the need for incarceration in certain circumstances.

In my role as an Assistant District Attorney, I have worked to support programs aimed at strengthening families and providing support for at-risk youth to keep them from becoming system-involved.  I have represented the District Attorney on commissions and work groups aimed at reforming the jail and pretrial release system.  I recognize that public safety is more enduringly safeguarded not just by prosecuting those who have committed crimes, but by working with people and communities to create hope and opportunities.

Informing my views on all of these issues and further shaping the type of judge I will be is my background as one of eleven children in a family that includes brothers and sisters who are African American, Vietnamese, and Korean.  We represent not only different races but also different religions, sexual orientations and gender identities.  So I not only embrace the diversity of Santa Clara County, I have a personal interest in ensuring that the justice system is fair for all individuals.

My Message

Santa Clara County needs judges who reflect the values of the community.  There needs to be no doubt that the laws apply fairly to all.  In my courtroom, everyone will feel respected and heard.

My professional background will enable  me to hit the ground running.  The courtroom is a place I appeared regularly for 25 years.  The diversity in my personal background which has expanded my lens, and my lengthy experience working with the judicial system and in the community will enable me to judge wisely.

A vote for me is a vote for justice for all in Santa Clara County.
