Education has always been a great passion of mine and it has grown even stronger after becoming a mother. In my adult life I have always remained informed and active in fighting for a fair education for all students. While earning my bachelor's degree I taught and organized a children's writing class from the local library. I also worked at the university's Writing Center to help fellow students. It awarded me the opportunity to present at several conferences where I discussed ways to actively engage our learners. I then studied at Colorado State University where I focused on how trauma affects student learning and writing, which has provided me deeper insight into how to reach students that are dealing with issues beyond the classroom. I have always been passionate about standing up for the voices that are often unheard.

I am a product of the public schools and now my children are beginning their journey through them. These schools are the future for my two sons and all of the children in our community. Because of that, these schools will now be my top priority.

While we are ranked 5th in the state as a district overall in North Carolina, I want to make sure we are able to push further down that path of success while meeting the needs of our growing community. To do that, I want to ensure we have the tools needed to truly live out our motto: Every child, every day. We are all still learning. And we are all unique. We cannot expect every child to learn in the same way. But with the proper programs in place and our school choice determined by programs rather than personnel, we will connect with more students and they will begin to reach higher than they ever thought possible. I will take it as a personal responsibility and commitment to make sure that every single child--every single day--feels safe in our schools, feels supported, and feels empowered. When we take care of our teachers and students, the benefits roll into our community and our economy.

I will work closely with other school board members to open lines of communication not only with our school community, but also with local and state representatives to find ways to preserve the arts and other electives that are at risk of being cut due to new class size mandates. I will work to also incorporate new school programs that truly provide school choice to our parents; and I will work to ensure our schools have the ability to match the growth of our community. A lot of issues that are taking place in our district, currently, can be alleviated by open and clear communication. I am not only able to listen to issues and suggestions, but I will then apply those and find a creative solution. The board is a collaborative effort, and I look forward to bringing a fresh perspective and a genuine drive to that table.

I will use the money raised to better reach our community members and to let them know I am here to work with them and ensure our children receive the best education possible.

It would be an honor to prove my determination and passion to you as an elected member of the MGSD School Board. I appreciate all of your support. Please don't forget to vote November 7, 2017.

Thank you.
