Are you disgusted with the complete lack of morality and values shown by this GOP dominated government? Have you realized that we the people are of no concern to them? Does it infuriate you that our elected representatives work strictly for the top 1% and their special interest groups?  The only way to reverse our government’s disastrous course is to remove the GOP majority in Congress.  Nevada House District 3 is open for 2018. This is a crucial seat. We must keep it Democratic. I want the United States to get back to being a democracy, not an oligarchy. If you agree, then I ask you to join me. I have no rich donors, I do not come from a long line of politicians, and I am not beholden to any special interests. It‘s time to fight. The future of this country and our people are at stake.

My Common Sense Philosophy:

My reason for running is to reverse the ongoing destruction of the middle-class in America. I am devoted to common sense solutions. Republicans continue to move us backward with antiquated, failed ideas like trickle-down economics and tax cuts for the rich.  I believe the Democratic Party has the right approach to public policy. But it has been too passive in conveying these ideas. Democrats need to realize they are up against an opposition that is ruthless and devious. They believe the end justifies the means. I will fight tooth and nail against the destructive GOP policies. The only way to end this GOP reign of terror is to vote them out. But this won’t be easy. Voter suppression, fake news, and outright lies remain very effective weapons used against the people.

I am seeing a society barely staying afloat. The great American ideal of each generation doing better than the preceding one is gone. GOP policies have weakened our nation and endangered our future. The richest Americans don’t need a tax cut. Trickle-down economics is just a Republican dirty trick which I see right through. It has been proven time and time again to fail. One needs to look no further than the state of Kansas as an obvious example. After 8 years of tax cuts, the state can’t fund basic services and education. The Republican controlled state congress finally revolted against their GOP governor and reversed his policies. Meanwhile, states like California and Minnesota are thriving thanks to the moderate policies of Democratic administrations.

My background: Native Nevadan

I am proud to have been born and raised in Las Vegas. I grew up going to public school and playing sports with my friends in our public parks. I graduated from Clark High School in 1983. After high school, I was awarded an academic scholarship to Pepperdine University in California, where I also played some college baseball.

I have owned and operated my own insurance agency for the past 16 years. I built my agency from the ground up. I pride myself on being a self-made businessman. My experience provides me with insight into the challenges faced by the Nevada family. I have a front row seat to the struggles of middle class America. I see the effects of income inequality. I see families unable to send their children to college. I see that most people have no extra money to invest for retirement. If we don’t stop the GOP agenda, families will soon lose their health insurance. I won’t allow this to happen on my watch.

Personal Life: Family First

I have enjoyed being married to my loving and supportive wife, Alison for 14 years. Like me, she is devoted to our family and community. She has been a busy stay at home mother to our three girls, and a volunteer youth group leader. She is currently completing her Masters and teaching certification through UNLV. She is excited to return to work and assist with the teacher shortage in Clark County. Most of my extended family also lives in Las Vegas, including my father, mother, and brother. My father came to Las Vegas back in the 50’s while stationed at Nellis Air Force base. He met my mother at the bank where she worked as a teller. They were married and settled here to raise their family in Spring Valley. I am a product of the same middle class that I am trying to protect. In my spare time, I enjoy the outdoors, visiting with friends, piano lessons with my daughters, home improvement projects with my wife, and football.

Critical Issues:

Healthcare: Right of the People

I’m known for being direct, so let me be clear: Healthcare is a right of the people. My number one concern is saving healthcare in the United States.  As an insurance agent, I have helped hundreds of Nevadans both prior to the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare), and now during the ACA era. As a self-employed person for 16 years, I buy my family’s policy in the individual marketplace. I know more about health insurance than most of our politicians. It’s frightening when I watch interviews with our legislators. They clearly do not understand the issue. We are talking about people’s lives, not to mention the economic impact of damaging an industry that makes up 20% of the entire national economy. I can do better.

The ACA was a good starting point. It has done more good than bad. Most importantly, people with pre-existing conditions, who in the past could never become insured, are now able to do so. This means they can lead healthy, productive lives. Nevada families should not have to suffer medical bankruptcy to stay alive. Sadly, the GOP has been able to sabotage the ACA. For years they raged against “Obamacare” and vowed to repeal and replace it. It was a hollow, cynical lie. They never expected to have a Republican President to sign off on its demise. Now, 8 years later, they have their chance. As I expected all along, they have no better plan. But amidst this crisis, I see opportunity. If you believe, like I do, that we must care for people with pre-existing conditions, a single payer, Medicare for all system is the logical, inevitable solution. It is the only way we will ever get a handle on costs, which continue to rise and devour a higher percentage of our Gross Domestic Product each year.  If a government cannot take care of its people, it is useless. The timing is right to get this done.

Economy: Stop Funding Endless Wars. Invest in Our People

Good jobs have been disappearing for decades. In their place, low paying, service industry jobs have become the norm. This is getting worse by the day. As we currently sit, retail jobs are being lost rapidly. Whether due to automation or just changing buying patterns, this is a fact. What we need is a New, New Deal. Anyone can see that our infrastructure is in terrible shape. Our leaders have lacked the courage to address it. As voters, we have not demanded that they do so. It is time to reallocate our tax revenues to improving our roads, bridges, airports, and power grids. These projects will require skilled tradesmen who will earn a decent salary.

Who would have imagined that the United States would be slashing funding for research and development, and education? As a nation, our current administration has directed us away from renewable energy back to oil and coal. We waste our resources on backwards policies like a failed war on drugs and a useless wall. Meanwhile, the U.S. is losing its competitive edge.

In short, we need to rebuild our country with our skilled workers while using new, sustainable energy. This is not an original idea. It’s just common sense.

Education: Strengthen the Public System

The education system suffers from a lack of funding. The newly proposed house budget cuts 8 billion from education, but it adds 1.6 billion for a border wall and an additional 25 billion for the military. The United States has plenty of dedicated teachers, administrators, and students. But their efforts are betrayed by inadequate support. The new GOP idea is to privatize everything. Our new Secretary of Education, Betsy Devos, wants to fund private enterprises with public funds. I am completely against this idea. Instead, we should invest in our public system rather than starving it. The result will be a society which is better educated, and united, not separated between the haves and the have-nots. I am a product of public education and my children are as well.

Campaign Finance Reform: Repeal Citizens United

Corporations are not people. The ramifications of the Citizens United decision have been disastrous for our Democracy. It has allowed super-wealthy individuals to control government policy through their bought and paid-for candidates. With their bottomless supply of money, they can spend as much as it takes to get their way. It is legalized bribery. We must fight this if we want to remain a democracy.

Environment: Save Our Planet

The current administration has declared war on the earth. They deny climate change. They weaken clean water laws. They sell off our best public lands. They appoint an EPA director who wants to abolish the agency altogether. Clearly they have decided to exploit the land for its resources without any regard for the damage being done. It’s all about their money. How immoral must one be to show no concern for the children of the future? They are willing to jeopardize our clean air and water so a handful of billionaires can get even richer. How is that a government serving the people? Protecting our planet must be a priority. A balance between commerce and conservation can be achieved if we make the right choices.

Yucca Mountain: No Way

There are some Nevadans who want the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste facility to re-open. They argue that the jobs created are worth the environmental risk. I am not one of them. I will never support Nevada being turned into a nuclear waste dump. The people of our state deserve better. We cannot allow the rest of our nation to use our state as their collective garbage pit. Senator Reid was able to protect us from this atrocity for many years. But he is retired now, so it will be up to a new generation to fight. I will never compromise on this issue. Not even if President Trump used it to threaten our health insurance as he has already done.

Drug Policy: The War on Drugs Cannot Be Won

I am firmly against the War on Drugs. The past 40 years have proven that it is not winnable. But the war on drugs is good policy for the GOP. They get to jail poor citizens who cannot afford good lawyers. They enrich themselves, and their cronies, with for profit prisons. As a bonus, a large segment of our society is permanently restricted from voting and participating in our democracy. For the GOP, this is called a win/win. What a shameful policy.

The past few years have seen changes in the marijuana laws. That underground economy is now being regulated and taxed. This is a great step forward. I support further moving in this direction. Look what our drug war has done to our neighbor, Mexico, as well as our inner cities. It is time to regulate and tax it. There will be less money spent on prisons, less marginalization, and increased revenues for education. That is a better win/win for the country.

My Promise: Hold Me Accountable

If elected, I will always be available for the people. I continue to be amazed at the elected representatives that avoid their constituents! They won’t hold town halls because they can’t defend their positions. In the rare occasion when they do hold a meeting, they put constraints on public participation. I would never behave that way. I would meet regularly with the people – in person. There would be no time limits. I would stay all day and all night until everyone got a chance to express their opinion. After all, it is a government for the people and by the people. I am inspired by the citizens that stand up for what is right. I invite you to stand and fight with me, Jack Love. It’s time for Love for Nevada!

Officially Running

Official Announcement of Candidacy

Jack Love (D), Nevada Congressional District 3

Las Vegas, NV – Thursday, August 31, 2017

I am hereby announcing my candidacy for the Democratic Party nomination for the United States House of Representatives, Nevada District 3.

For too long, our elected representatives have ignored the needs of their constituents. Instead, they do the bidding of the donor class and big business. I am not a professional politician; I will work hard in the interests of, and be accountable to, the people of my district. I pledge to fight for the middle class with common sense solutions. First and foremost, we need to tackle head-on both comprehensive health care reform and the stark wealth and income inequalities in the US economy.

As an insurance professional for 16 years, I have hands-on, practical experience with health insurance. I will fight for a single payer solution. It is the only way to achieve cost reductions while providing good, quality healthcare. It’s inevitable. Why delay its implementation and continue the recent American practice of never solving a problem?

Republicans in Congress were one vote away from taking healthcare away from millions of Americans in exchange for a massive tax cut for their billionaire friends. In the face of a crippling national debt and a growing budget deficit, they can come up with no better idea than their ever-popular tax cut for the rich and privatization of Social Security and Medicare. They would sacrifice our hard-earned social protections to satisfy their billionaire donors while still running up the debt. These are not solutions. This is not leadership. We need leaders who will defend our hard-fought rights.

Inequality is skyrocketing, and the people need a raise. For decades, productivity gains have been going to the top instead of workers. There is something fundamentally wrong when CEOs and stockholders are building hundred million dollar yachts while most working and middle class families are living paycheck to paycheck. The result of such disparity is that now the richest 1% grow wealthier, while good jobs are disappearing and wages are in decline. We must reverse this trend. I support a $15 minimum wage.

Another way of achieving this goal is for the government to invest in the people, education, research and development, infrastructure, and 21st-century technologies -- a kind of New New Deal. Funding for infrastructure improvement will not only bolster our transportation system and prepare us for climate change but will also generate well-paying jobs. An energy policy that moves away from fossil fuels to solar and wind will create good jobs of the future and render our economy more competitive. The national budget should be used to make college and trade school affordable to young people and less for unwinnable wars. We must prepare all of our children for the global, digital economy. These are not radical ideas; they are simply common sense.

Let’s make the United States smart again. The time has come to stop squandering our resources on the wrong things. We don’t need to build a ridiculous wall. We don’t need to waste more money in Afghanistan. And we certainly don’t need a tax giveaway for the obscenely rich! Instead, we need to direct our priorities to the true strength of our Republic – the American People.

I plan to host frequent gatherings to listen to the diverse voices in my community and to talk about what we can accomplish together in the spirit of inclusion. I will not play identity politics, but nor will I stand for any attempt to marginalize or deny equal, civil and legal rights to women, immigrants, people of color, religious minorities, or those in the LGBTQ community. I vow to work hard to earn the people’s trust and to never be corrupted by corporate donors. I invite you to join with me, Jack Love, in my campaign for Nevada’s 3rd Congressional District. With your participation, we can bring fresh ideas and common sense solutions to Washington.
