What does it take for a candidate to flip a district blue in Virginia? It takes more than knowing that the district went for Clinton in 2016 and Warner in 2014.  It takes the grit to go door-to-door day after day. It takes the ability to listen and learn from voters. It takes a fundamental belief in the importance of public service. And it takes the willingness to work harder than you’ve ever worked before.

The candidates in the top 5* flippable districts not only have what it takes to win, they are a true snapshot of Virginia. In fact, the candidates will represent long needed historic “firsts” in Virginia politics.

Kathy Tran will be the first Asian-American woman to serve in the General Assembly. Kathy came to America as an infant with her family as a boat refugee from Vietnam. Though her family was offered asylum in other countries, they waited 13 months to be able to go to the United State. Kathy is running to protect the ideals that brought her family to America. Learn more about Kathy.

Danica Roem will be the first transgender person elected to office in Virginia. As a life-long resident of the district and a journalist who’s covered the area for over 10 years, Danica will bring her key understanding of local issues to the General Assembly. Learn more about Danica.

Elizabeth Guzman will be the first Latina elected to the House of Delegate. Elizabeth immigrated to America from Peru as a single mother looking for a better future for her daughter Pamela. At first, she juggled three jobs just to afford a one-bedroom apartment. But through hard work, perseverance, and dedication, she put herself through college and graduate school. She is now a social worker and public administrator for the City of Alexandria, where she works everyday helping hardworking families to help achieve their American Dream. Learn more about Elizabeth.

Jennifer Foy was one of the first African-American women to graduate from Virginia Military Institute. Today she is a public defender, educator, foster parent, and parent to twins. Because she believes so strongly that no child should be without a nurturing home, she started the Foundation for Foster and Orphan Children, a nonprofit committed to building better futures for orphans and foster children. Learn more about Jennifer.

David Reid was the first member of his family to graduate from college. Coming from humble beginnings in Rockbridge County, Virginia, he was adopted by foster parents and later served in the Navy for 23 years. Today David is a decorated Navy veteran and business professional who brings over 30 years of experience in strategic management, global telecommunications, and the defense industry to his campaign to represent Virginia’s 32 House of Delegates District in Eastern Loudoun County. Learn more about David.
