I'm not a politician. I'm a working mom. I live in Austin and work in the healthcare industry. I was born in South Oak Cliff, on the poor side of Dallas, and I grew up in Ovilla. On the weekends I volunteer; in my free time, I teach yoga. During the week I sit on a board whose focus is delivering health care to poor and low-income families in Austin. I love spending time with my family and my pets.

So why am I running for Congress?

I’m doing this because our state and our country very much need to regain a sense of balance and decency. In tragedy, Americans unite and demonstrate acts of courage, self-sacrifice, generosity, and compassion, just as the first responders did 16 years ago in Manhattan and just as folks did when Hurricane Harvey hit our State. And I firmly believe our country can come together in the absence of tragedy and demonstrate these same character traits. I believe in this state and its people, and I believe that we can be that voice of balance and decency, which is desperately needed in Washington, D.C.

I’m not defined by political dogma, but by values like honesty, responsibility, respect, optimism, commitment. I think those are values we can all get behind, no matter where we fall on the political spectrum.

We must find middle ground. We need to work across the aisle to make life better for all Texans. We should be working together to find better ways to make sure our families can be healthy, to insist our veterans get the care and respect they’ve earned, and to put folks to work so our economy can continue to thrive and our communities improve. Most of all, we need government of and for the people again; we are, after all, One Nation under God; we are Indivisible. For growth to happen, we can’t wait for anyone else or any other year or any other excuse to keep us from doing what we know is right.

That's why I'm running for House of Representatives in the 25th.

I'm running because I'm one of y'all, and I want to be your voice.

I'm serious about this, but I'm also serious about doing this the right way -- by relying on Texans, listening to real people instead of PACs, and working on the things that people and families care about and want to make right for our state and our country.

That's what this campaign is about. My goal--and my promise--is to step up and serve your interests, so folks in Cleburne, in Burnet, in Meridian, in Copperas Cove, and every Texan in the 25th Congressional district has a voice in our government.

I'm going all over the district and talking to folks like you, because I actually care about this country and our state and what our kids' and grandkids' future looks like. I want to know what is on your minds, what you care about and what you expect from your next representative. Then I want to make sure I can deliver on that.

I'm running because our district deserves better than an establishment politician who only wants to protect and serve his own interests and who refuses to meet with the folks in this district. Texas deserves a public servant who will listen to them and their concerns. And that’s exactly what I plan to do.

It's time for the people from Texas' 25th Congressional District to have someone who actually represents them in the House.

This is going to be a tough fight. My opponent has a ton of money. I'm sure the experts will tell us we can't win. Those are the same "experts" who told me I'd never be able to put myself through college as a single, teen mom with a brand new baby. They're the same "experts" who tell you that the polls are always right.

I don't much care for the experts, and I suspect that you don't either. We should all be tired of leadership by the polls anyway.

Stand with me, and I promise I will stand for you.

Leaders Don't Blame the Victims

Today we awakened to yet another petty, vindictive social media attack by the president, this time on the Mayor of San Juan. She is bravely fighting for the lives of her people during a horrific humanitarian crisis in Puerto Rico, wading through raw sewage with a bullhorn, searching for survivors, while the President golfs.

Instead of denouncing these hateful remarks and calling for real leadership, Roger Williams and the rest of Texas' Republican Congressional delegation are silent.

This is not leadership. When our leaders are willing to let our fellow citizens suffer and die, it's on us to call it out and step up. We've got to be the ones who have to dig deep and commit to changing things. And that's why I'm running for Congress.

Remember how eagerly we all pitched in to help when the need was there in front of us, in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey? That's what we do as Texans and Americans. We help each other.

Right now, our fellow Americans in Puerto Rico need our help. Hurricane Maria has decimated the island, and this is an unprecedented humanitarian crisis.

So, this morning, I'm asking two things:

1. If you're tired of Congressional Republicans silently sitting by while our President shames our country and makes a mockery of our values and the rule of law, please make a donation to my Crowdpac campaign. I've been tremendously blessed and I'm off to a great start. Please pitch in $25 or more if you believe that the time is now to get our country back.

2. Please, if you are able, join me in donating to a charity that's on the ground working in Puerto Rico. There are a number of ways you can help, and this article does a good job of explaining how to make your choice:

You inspire me!

Good morning, friends.

Wow. Last night in Lakeway was my first event as a candidate. How truly inspiring it was to hear from folks who believe in a Texas where everyone gets affordable healthcare, and from folks who get that leadership isn't about bullying people on Twitter. These were people who are displaying leadership on their own--they're getting out there, rolling up their sleeves, and coming together as a community to discuss what it is they can do to push things forward. It gave me so much hope to see folks united around the concept of service, and to see people who spent aTuesday night discussing the direction they'd like to see that leadership take.

I was happy to listen and to hear what matters most to the group, but I was also very fortunate to get to share my thoughts on thoughtful healthcare and immigration reform that is on the side of humanity. We know that isn't mutually exclusive of economic growth--quite the opposite, in fact.

It was an honor to meet Chetan and to hear his views, as well. I am thrilled about this race to represent TX25, and know that it's going to produce a fruitful discussion about how we can help the district and the country move forward.

With love and respect,

Julie

A huge thank you!

On Tuesday I emailed many of y’all to let you know that I was going to run for U.S. House of Representatives because now’s the time for us to get back to working on things that matter to real Texans, and make things right for our state and our country.

So many of y’all have already pledged to this campaign, because you want to make a difference and get our state and our country headed back in the right direction. I can’t even put into words what I’m feeling after the overwhelmingly positive response I’ve gotten over the last 72 hours and how y’all have made me feel.

All I can say is I’m blown away by the energy and determination I’m seeing from y’all. You have answered the question: Is this real? Could this possibly be true? Is she really doing this? Y’all have inspired me, and y’all make me feel incredibly honored to be a part of something that’s going to change our state, and our country, for the better.

So to everyone who has already decided they’re ready to believe, to everyone who has signed up for my mailing list, or liked my FB page, or told a friend we’re doing this, to everyone who has already pledged on my Crowdpac page (see link below) or emailed their mom and asked them to donate to my campaign, from the bottom of my heart, thank you, thank you, thank you!

I want to hear from y’all. If you’ve got an idea or a suggestion or a question about why I’m running, drop me a line at julie@juliefortexas25.com.

No mistake about it, we’ve still got a long way to hit our goal before we can officially launch this campaign. So today I’m asking each and everyone you to participate in what I’m calling “$25 for the 25th.” That’s $25 that will go to powering a real campaign, a campaign that’s about real Texans and addressing real-life issues that we all have to face and struggle with every day.
