I’m Mitchell Cobert, and I’m exploring a run for Congress in New Jersey’s 11th District. I am a local Morristown lawyer that never cared much for publicity or glamour. But I believe the people in our District need a proven advocate who will put their actual needs ahead of partisan rhetoric. As a Morristown resident since 1982, I have long been active in community and civic events. My work helped establish the Morristown Partnership, which supports our local businesses and our vibrant community. As a former prosecutor and a past president of the Morris County Bar Association, I have spent decades representing the victims of securities fraud, the elderly and infirm, as well as others.

Congressman Frelinghuysen voted with President Trump 97.6% of the time, including votes to repeal Obamacare and to weaken environmental protection. That lock-step approach is unacceptable and doesn’t reflect the multifaceted needs of our community. I have long fought powerful business interests for my clients, and won. I’d like to do the same for the people of the 11th District.

My message to you:

  • On the Affordable Care Act: I strongly support the ACA and will act to preserve and improve it. Hundreds of thousands of New Jersey residents rely on this coverage, and would face harm if their coverage was rescinded. I will be an aggressive defender of and voice for Planned Parenthood. Planned Parenthood is a vital and necessary provider of women’s health services that needs our support.
  • On the Environment: Congressman Frelinghuysen voted to block protections for clean water; prevent the Bureau of Land Management from implementing updated fracking regulations, and allow oil and gas production to be effectively subsidized on public lands. He also voted to block increased protections for streams from mining waste. Contrary to Congressman Frelinghuysen, I will actively support legislation to protect our environment and support the EPA in its efforts.
  • On Social Security: As far back as 2005 Congressman Frelinghuysen supported attempts to privatize social security. I opposed this at the time. We must rely on Social Security as a safety net, not a way for Wall Street to gamble with our future. I will continue to vigorously oppose the privatization of social security.
  • On Wall Street: As a prosecutor and attorney representing the victims of securities fraud, I understand Wall Street’s abuses. I strongly support reinstatement of legislation to separate ownership of broker-dealers and banks. I will continue to aggressively fight to protect the people who rely on Wall Street, not those who abuse our trust.

My approach is people oriented. The people in our District, whether Republican or Democrat, must work together to fashion ways to solve our common problems. As I have in the past, I will continue to represent victims of injustice. I will not be silent when to do so only aids special interests, bigotry and prejudice.

I need your help to reach my goal of $100,000 in pledges by October 1st. Please pledge your support either by donating or by endorsing my campaign.

“Mitchell is an absolutely straight shooter, and says what needs to be said in such a way that everyone can "hear" him. We need more of that in Washington. And a really nice guy to boot.”

“I have known Mitchell Cobert for may years. He is a man of integrity and is not afraid to do the right thing even when it might be unpopular. If you want to have an intelligent discussion, speak to Mitchell. He has a history of sticking up for the little guy against the vested interests. This is the kind of person we need to represent NJ-11.”

See Mitch at an event near you

This week has brought Mitch to a variety of public and private events. So far, the on-the-ground enthusiasm has been overwhelming. We are regularly sharing information about specific events on facebook. We will continue to do this so that interested members of the community can talk with him directly. We are also planning larger speaking events over the next few weeks in all four District 11 counties.

We have gained over $20,000 in pledges, and we are steadily making progress towards our goal of $100,000. We need more pledges now in order to show our campaign’s viability. Every contribution is greatly appreciated and will be used to grow our campaign operations.

A large number of people have expressed an interest in volunteering. We have set up a SurveyMonkey questionnaire for you to submit your information to us. We will be contacting volunteers over the next week to start talking about specific projects.

Thanks for your continued support,

Mitch & the team
