My Beliefs

Since I was a child, I have worked for a better future and stood up for the most vulnerable. I have always believed that our children are the key to a brighter tomorrow. It is no coincidence that I am a pediatrician, a novelist and a mother of four. We all, especially our children, deserve a safe environment, meaningful health care, a strong educational foundation, and ample opportunities for success. I refuse to stand by while shortsighted political decisions undermine the future of our children and our nation. It is time for a new generation of citizens to engage and upend politics-as-usual.

My Beginnings

My father once told me he would go hungry before he took a penny from my education fund. He meant it. When he first arrived in the United States, he shared an apartment with three friends. They had a single bed that he was entitled to every third night. My mother became a civil engineer in Afghanistan when few women did so. Drawn by America's promise that hard work would not go unrewarded, my parents braved the challenges of moving across the world. They didn’t just talk about the kind of life they wanted – they built it.

All it took was a single experience in a New Jersey elementary school to teach me that my voice mattered. I stood before the School Board and spoke out about the environmental impact and potential toxicities of the Styrofoam trays the cafeteria had started to use. The Board took our presentation seriously and made a change.

With that activist spirit, Brandeis University, a campus that buzzes with the dynamic energy of science, history and social justice, was a perfect fit.

As a Pediatrician

Being a pediatrician is a privilege. From handing a swaddled newborn to excited first time parents to holding a mother's hand as her child takes final breaths, I've been privy to the most joyous and harrowing moments in a family's story. I’ve worked with families scraping by on a single income or struggling to manage a child’s chronic disease. I’ve seen adolescents led into the emergency department in handcuffs, unwilling to meet my eye.

This Moment

The stakes are just too high. Every single one of us --the debt-addled college student, the new American, the young woman who has been told what she can't do, the parent trying to make ends meet -- needs to find a way to be involved in the process, whether by voting, speaking out, or running for office. It's time for people to reclaim politics and take the reins.

And with the right policies around health care, immigration and education, we can create a more robust and stable economy. That is the way to enrich the American Dream.

I'm a problem solver, a listener, a scientist and a do-er. This is a chance to make much needed changes and I take no opportunity for granted. I bring a fresh voice and a diversity of real experiences to the table. I am part of a new wave of engaged citizens, pushing aside rhetoric and working towards a brighter tomorrow.

Your support means the world to me!

On The Issues:

  • Our environmental policies need to be guided by science and a moral imperative to safeguard the world we inhabit.
  • American foreign policy should respect our troops first and foremost by keeping them safe and avoiding unnecessary interventions. Strategic diplomacy and thoughtful alliances need to be the game plan.
  • All children deserve a solid educational foundation. We can’t claim to believe in equality and still have public schools that are severely shortchanged. All students deserve a fighting chance.
  • We need to restore the doctor-patient relationship. Sustainable health care solutions must drive down the bloated costs of administration and pharmaceuticals. The role of commercial insurances needs to evolve and tort reform is a must.
  • Our criminal justice system doesn’t solve problems. It is a for-profit industry. We need misdemeanor reform and a strong focus on rehabilitation for minors.
  • Every woman should have the right to make her own healthcare decisions and expect equal pay for equal work. Sexual assault is a crime and should be processed as such. College campuses should not be an exception.
  • Civil rights for all, without disclaimers.
  • We need gun safety laws that ban assault rifles, expand background checks, close loopholes, and don’t put weapons in the hands of domestic abusers, criminals and those with severe mental illness.

What a difference a day makes!

Friends and family, I'm truly moved by the support I've seen coming out in just about a day's worth of fundraising. We're already at $7610!

Thanks to all who've shared this post and to all who've reached into their pockets. I'm grateful for your confidence in me and I will do my absolute best to put your dollars to smart, effective work. Please do continue to spread the word. It's unfortunate that a candidate's viability and strength is so largely measured by fundraising. We can change that by focusing on getting to know the candidates and their values. In the coming weeks, I'll be sharing more so that people get to know me.

With gratitude,

Nadia
