Cassandra Lems for Nassau County Executive - Vote November 7, 2017
Cassandra Lems is a truly independent candidate, supported by a grassroots organization -- the Green Party of Nassau County. Unlike the Democratic and Republican candidates, she is not beholden to any corporate sponsor, special interest or political machine. She is committed to creating a positive future for a county too long controlled by the two corporate parties.
She will work to:
* Fight corruption in county government. Ban practices that foster corruption, starting with the elimination of political patronage hiring practices. Overhaul the procedure for vetting county contractors. Work to lower the financial limit for contracts that can be awarded without legislative approval. No more pay-to-play.
*Restructure county taxes to reduce real estate taxes: work with state and county legislators to institute a county piggyback income tax as a portion of county government's tax revenue, so that real estate taxes can be reduced to a reasonable level. Overhaul the broken and unfair real estate assessment system, under the leadership of a professional assessor.
* Fight the privatization of public utilities and services. Privatization provides a quick fix for government budgets, but it leads to the public paying more for vitally needed services such as transportation, sewage, and drinking water when they are turned over to for-profit companies. Also, government functions such as public relations and legal services should be brought back in-house instead of paying for-profit firms to handle them.
*Consolidate school districts into a unified county-wide school district in order to reduce the school taxes by eliminating redundancies. Allow students and their parents to choose which school they will attend, thus reducing the disparity in the quality of education between poor and rich neighborhoods.
* Safeguard our natural environment. Protect the ocean, our waterways, our beaches and our drinking water from dangerous runoff by banning or restricting the use of certain pesticides, fertilizers, and other pollutants. Reduce our output of solid waste, especially plastics and non-recyclable packaging. Encourage the use of clean and renewable energy. Ban single-use plastic bags.
* Decriminalize marijuana on a county level. No more arrests or prosecution for simple possession. Most Americans want marijuana legalized. It is a waste of police time, court resources, and jail space to focus on punishing marijuana users. Instead, let’s focus on getting dangerous drugs off the streets, namely heroin and other opiates that are killing our young people.

“I support Cassandra Lems for Nassau County Executive because it is time to rid Nassau County of the stink of corruption, and both of the major parties have rolled in that stink long enough.”
