As a recent graduate from the Elizabeth school system, I have seen the weaknesses it has. I am willing to fix the issues students, staff and parents have to go through daily.
Students have been left out of the equation when it comes to decision making in the school district. It's time for their voice to be heard.
On The Issues:
-More flexible uniform policy
Many of the staff at our schools are pressured to "get" their students in trouble because they are not meeting the expectations of the administrator. Their administrator sees not handing students detention as a bad thing. This causes students to get a stain on their records for something so little like a uniform infraction.
-PARCC should NOT be a graduation requirement
Statistics has shown that not many students are passing the PARCC exam. Please be reminded that this exam will become a graduation requirement. It is not fair for the teachers to adjust their curriculum to teach the exam. It is not fair for the students to be taught how to take the exam, instead of topics that can lead to their careers.
-Supports shorter school days
EPS has an absurd length of a school day. For high school, it is long so that they have time to fit in AP courses that supposedly "helps" students to gain college credit. Little do the parents and students know, AP courses are here to just show how "great and amazing" our high schools are. It's how EHS and Hamilton make it to US News' list of Top High Schools every year.
-Supports a "No homework" policy
After a long school day, follows a load of homework assigned to students. Studies shown that homework does not increase the grades of students. What does increase is stress among students. With classes counting homework as high as 30 percent of their grade, it's no wonder why students stress over it.
-Against Zero-Tolerance Policies
The zero-tolerance policy in school is unfair. According to an article on PBS, racial profiling occurs in schools that implement these types of policies.
-Willing to work for the students
As a recent graduate from the Elizabeth school system, many of the challenges I faced as a student and the challenges from teachers I've witness are current issues that need to be fixed. No donation is too small.
