My name is Christine Brown and I’m running for Congress in Washington’s 4th Congressional District.

I hope you’ll help!

American democracy depends on checks and balances among the branches of government. Effective governing requires that our elected officials compromise in order to create legislation that works for all Americans. When one party holds both houses of congress and the White House, the system of checks and balances is not effective, and the majority party has little incentive to negotiate or compromise in the best interests of all Americans.

People think of Washington State as a deep blue state. We have ten representatives; four of them are Republican. Washington’s 4th district is currently represented by Republican Congressman Dan Newhouse. I am running for office to help flip the majority of the House in 2018, to restore the checks and balances in government and to strengthen a spirit of compromise and negotiation in the House of Representatives.

Why I'm Running

After the election in November, I was heartsick and worried about our beloved democracy. I’ve always believed American democracy was strong, but it requires that we remain vigilant in protecting the freedoms guaranteed in the Constitution. As I watch new developments every day, my concern for the sanctity and protection of our democracy is greater now than ever before.

If You Want Something Done Right...

So, like millions of Americans, I've called my Congressman and I've written him about my concerns. I've donated to causes that work to protect our democracy, and I've read and watched a lot more news, particularly with differing opinions and ideas, to stay informed. I comment on Facebook. I've marched, and I've rallied. I organized a health care town hall when our Congressman wouldn’t.

But it’s not enough. That’s when I realized I needed to run for office myself.

Vote for Democracy

"The vote is the most powerful instrument ever devised by man for breaking down injustice and destroying the terrible walls which imprison men because they are different from other men."- Lyndon B. Johnson

I vote because I believe in democracy. How about you?

It is only by way of our vote that we will change how government operates. Casting your vote by November 7th in the 2017 General Election is important. Here in Washington’s 4th Congressional District, we are electing county sheriffs, port commissioners, city council and school board members. Democrats Susan Swanson is running for State Representative and Karen Hardy is running for State Senate from the 7th Legislative District – they deserve our support and our votes.

Voting strengthens our democracy. Almost half of our neighbors – 45% -- are not voting. The US ranks 27th in the world for voter participation. We can do better. We must do better.  We need to get out every single vote, especially Democratic votes in districts that have voted largely Republican in the past. We must engage people who registered but who are not voting; convince toss-up independent voters to choose Democrats; and offer alternatives for people who typically vote Republican but who are dissatisfied with current leadership in Congress and the White House. Before next year’s election, we must also add new voters to the rolls. Bottom line, we have a big task ahead.

VOTE RIGHT NOW

That’s why we are talking to voters right now about the importance of voting. We are running a radio campaign in Yakima and Tri-Cities. Also we have video spots on Facebook and Twitter. And we’re talking to Spanish speaking voters with radio spots in Yakima and Tri-Cities on Spanish language radio. Check out the messages below.

TV: Use the POWER You Have - VOTE - Pass It On

Radio: Pick Leaders (Spanish)

Radio: 27th In the World

VOTER REGISTRATION

In addition to our focus on voting right now, we are also launching a major campaign to register voters in preparation for the 2018 election. We will be coordinating with other organizations doing the same -- organizations like the State Democratic Party, County Democrat organizations, indivisible groups, and the League of Women Voters.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

First, encourage your friends, family and neighbors to vote between now and November 7. Vote!

Second, volunteer for Get Out The Vote and voter registration activities for future elections.

Third, donate here! Your contribution helps us buy campaign paper materials, pay travel expenses, purchase yard signs, website support, and purchase radio and online advertising.

Your support is valued and deeply appreciated. We have a solid base of Democratic supporters, many of whom are committed as they have never been before to strengthening our democracy. Let's build on that and bring new faces to our big table!
