My name is Marge Doyle and I am running for Congress in California’s 8th district.

We are the desert and mountain communities of the Inland Empire, High Desert and Eastern Sierra, including Mt Baldy, Highland, Victorville, Barstow and Bishop. We are a destination region filled with lands of natural wonder and beauty, including in Joshua Tree, Big Bear, Death Valley, Mt Whitney and Mammoth Lakes. We also have some of the largest military training centers in the country, including Twentynine Palms, Mountain Warfare Center and Fort Irwin.

I have dedicated my life and career to public service in my community — as a nurse, healthcare leader and an elected official on the Board of the Morongo Basin Healthcare District (MBHD).

I am not a career politician but I am an elected official on the Morongo Basin Health District (MBHD).  I was moved to run for office when our local hospital was under threat of closing in 2013. I knew the closure of our hospital would be catastrophic, resulting in deaths and severe job losses to our community. I ran and was elected in 2014. We were then able to save our hospital and 600 jobs as well as bring the MBHD back from near bankruptcy to financial security.

Once again, I find the people of my community are scared and uncertain about their future healthcare coverage — this time, however, change must be enacted on the national level. Congressman Paul Cook has voted repeatedly to take healthcare away  from over 100,000 people in the 8th district.

Congressman Cook asked me to analyze the most recent House healthcare bill. I provided a point-by-point analysis and clearly stressed that the bill removed protection for those with pre-existing conditions, covered fewer people and did not save money. I advised him to vote against the bill, but he caved to partisan politics and voted for the bill stating, “It doesn’t matter - the Senate will fix it.”  Since when does a Congressional vote not matter? And, we have witnessed since how the Senate’s bill was even more damaging towards protecting healthcare coverage for our constituents.

Cook has been removing protections from our most vulnerable neighbors, including our senior citizens and the poor, while privatizing our precious resources for corporate profit. The economy of our district relies heavily on tourism and recreation. We have to defend our National Parks, Public Lands, and Monuments — not shrink them — in order to protect our small businesses and jobs.

Our veterans also deserve to have their health care needs met. I propose to make all federally qualified health clinics in the country accessible to veterans under the VA system. This will nearly double the available points of access for healthcare to veterans nationwide, including in many rural areas that may not otherwise be served by the VA.

Right now, I will engage in a robust voter registration and voter canvassing campaign. We need to register voters and Get Out The Vote so we can elect officials that better represent our communities.

This is why I will need your support. Please donate $18 for 2018 today so we can build the progressive infrastructure into our desert and mountain communities and Flip the 8th!

_______________
