It is not easy being a progressive in a family full of staunch conservatives. When I was a boy, my parents taught me to admire Republicans like Jesse Helms and Trent Lott. Instead, I preferred Democrats like Sam Nunn, Fritz Hollings and Scoop Jackson.

I am unhappy that some members of my family of origin voted for Donald Trump in 2016; I did not. Some of my relationships have suffered in today's political climate, but I have become much closer to the friends, neighbors and kin who share my solemn belief that our country is heading in the wrong direction.

As an undergraduate student at Princeton University, I learned to think for myself and began to transcend the shackles of my narrow upbringing. I continued that journey when I worked for my cousin, Les Aspin, in Washington, D.C. My analytical skills were honed at UVA Law School. During my quarter century as a civil trial attorney, I learned the importance of listening and the value of empathy. I am now ready to embark on a mission of public service.

I humbly offer myself to the people of Florida's Second Congressional District. If they want me to serve, I will. If the voters prefer to stay the present, dangerous course, I will find another way to fight for the futures of our families.

The issues about which I am most passionate include environmental conservation, reproductive rights and fundamental respect for the dignity of all people. If elected, I will work tirelessly to promote our national security at home and abroad. That means funding a social safety net for those in need. That means pushing for tax reform that empowers the middle and lower classes. That means supporting responsible gun ownership while dramatically increasing funding for mental health. It also means opposing bigotry and intolerance at every turn.

Stacey and I live in a rural county on Florida's Gulf Coast.  She and I are both Native Floridians, born in Miami and Jacksonville, respectively. Wherever we travel in our fine state, we are confronted by the effects of a struggling education system, the scourge of substance abuse, the corrosive results of systemic poverty and the long-term impacts of power concentrated in the hands of a corrupt and privileged few.

We are also aware of communities where small groups of Floridians are sheltered from these daily concerns. We believe all citizens in our state deserve the same opportunities in life. Please support us in our quest to reclaim our country from the forces that have co-opted our government. Together, we will make a difference.

FIRST GOAL REACHED!

My Friends,

I am pleased to announce that our campaign just accomplished its first major goal - raising $25,000 in less than three weeks.

With this achievement, we have surpassed our closest Democratic Primary challenger.

Fundraising normally slows down just before the holidays and picks up again in January. However, it is not in my nature to accept what is "normal." Stacey and I are continuing to work hard behind the scenes.

Thank you for your participation in our movement to restore civility to your government in Washington, D.C.

Closing in on the campaign's first major fundraising goal...

Dear Friends,

I hope you are enjoying your weekend.

Nearly every successful political campaign excels at early fundraising. Having written that, I am happy to report that this campaign is $130 shy of collecting $20,000 in pledges. My closest primary competitor, an established Tallahassee politician, has raised around $23,000, two-thirds of it already spent. This week, with continued effort, our campaign will surpass that individual by eclipsing the $25,000 mark. Please continue to spread the word so it happens. Without momentum, we will sputter out and fail. Our nation cannot afford another failure. Future generations are counting on us to restore order to Congress.

LET'S CLEAN HOUSE!

First Goal Reached

Exciting news...we reached our first fundraising goal: $10,000. We did it in one week. Tomorrow, I will announce the campaign on social media. Our next goal is $100,000...before the end of the year.

Thank you all for being such important parts of this crusade. We need to save our country. Inaction is not an option.

The Lack of Civility in Political Discourse

In the 1980s, Ronald Reagan and Tip O'Neill could sit down over a friendly lunch and work out the upcoming year's national budget. Sadly, those days are long gone. In fact, today's political climate has become toxic. Families are divided. Friendships are strained. Communication is stretched to the breaking point...when it occurs at all.

Please join me on Facebook Live at 10:00 a.m. EST today for a discussion of this troubling development.
