Americans are more divided and polarized than at any time in recent history. Too many politicians simply want to exploit these divisions for their own gain, creating a political system incapable of addressing the many problems that our nation is facing. We need more leaders willing to work hard and challenge this status quo that threatens our future. And that is exactly what I‘ve been doing in Congress, bringing people together to solve problems.

Growing up in a tight-knit community in the Bungalow Belt on the Southwest Side of Chicago, I learned the values of hard work and service to others.  I also learned the importance of using common sense.  Watching politics in the city, I saw the job of elected officials as helping solve people’s problems, starting with the most basic needs.

As an engineer, I'm a problem solver, and as a former professor I know the importance of studying the facts when making a decision, and I bring these skills and sensibilities - as well as some common sense - to Congress.  I serve on the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee as well as the Science, Space, and Technology Committee. I've been focused on job creation, modernizing our transportation systems, making health care more affordable, helping small businesses, and promoting American innovation.  I've been a leader on expanding the scientific and entrepreneurial capacity of the United States, supporting more robust investments in R&D, and promoting programs that help researchers commercialize their products and create jobs. And I continue to do my best to help solve problems for my constituents.

This year I’ve taken an active leadership role in the 48-member bipartisan House Problem Solvers Caucus which is focused on developing solutions to break the partisan gridlock in a dysfunctional institution.  In the caucus I have been engaged in bipartisan efforts to make health care more affordable, reach an agreement to protect DACA recipients, and make new investments in infrastructure.

When I'm at home I constantly hear my constituents say, “Washington needs to stop the bickering and get something done.”  And that's what I strive to do every day.
