Rep. Juana Matias has dedicated her life to serving the communities of Massachusetts’ Third District. As a social worker, she served children and families in Haverhill, Lawrence, and Lowell. As an attorney with AmeriCorps, she advocated for undocumented migrant kids in deportation proceedings. And as the State Representative for the 16th Essex District, Rep. Matias has been an ardent supporter of measures to keep our communities safe, improve our public schools, and create good, 21st Century jobs. When she ran for state representative, no one thought she could beat the incumbent – but she won, and became just the second Latina to ever serve in the Massachusetts State House. If elected, she would be the first Latina ever elected to Congress in all of New England.

Juana was raised to believe in the importance of hard work and giving back. She came to the U.S. from the Dominican Republic with her family when she was five. They settled in Haverhill, MA and first lived in public housing. While Juana grew up going to public schools, her parents worked blue-collar factory jobs – often at minimum wages – to provide for Juana and her three brothers. After about 20 years, they were able to save up enough money to start a small family business in the community.

Although Juana was told she wouldn’t be able to afford to go to a four-year college, she ended up working her way through UMass-Boston and then Suffolk Law School. She has been serving the community ever since.

Now she needs your help to build this movement from the bottom up - are you in?
