My name is Michael Masterman-Smith. I am a cancer scientist,  pharmacologist and science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) researcher. I am running as a Democrat for the U.S. House of Representatives in California’s 25th district, a district Democrats can swing blue in 2018.

Less than 8% of the U.S. Congress has any background in medicine or healthcare, yet they define the nation’s healthcare policies and priorities.  I am joining a small group of medical specialists running for Congress in 2018 to change that.

My foray into healthcare started in pediatrics.  Working with children suffering from brain cancer, I found my purpose in translational medicine where, in studying these children’s cancers I identified unique cells called cancer stem cells.  This discovery stimulated new thinking about cancer, helped revolutionize the field and sped up the development of improved therapies.

Through my own experience I know the remarkable achievements we can make in healthcare and understand it’s heart-breaking failures. And, like cancer, if we don't take our problems head on, they can quickly snowball into catastrophic ones.  In Congress, I will sponsor legislation that creates a federal medical cannabis program.  I will be a leading voice in Congress for policies that are effective in improving healthcare, preventing overmedication, solving our opioid epidemic and putting our healthcare system on track to sustainability.  I'll push for  evidence-based policies, establish a coherent national security policy and commit the U.S. to a sustainable future which combats the unfolding global calamity of climate change.  I'll steward policies that support an innovation economy which creates high paying jobs and a robust manufacturing base while keeping the U.S. competitive in the world.

I grew up just outside the gates of the former U.S. Army Signal Corps headquarters at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey where my dad was a military satellite communications pioneer.  My mom is a public school reading teacher and children’s author.  My older brother, sister-in-law, two nephews and mom now live in rural Georgia.

I received my PhD in Molecular & Medical Pharmacology from the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and completed postdoctoral training in Biomedical Engineering in the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.  I'm currently co-founder of a Los Angeles-based start-up pharmaceutical company focused on hard-to-treat conditions and diseases.
