I am running for Eau Claire City Council because I started paying attention. Prior to a year ago, I would follow the big headlines but I was busy raising my young family, developing my counseling profession, growing my small business, volunteering with my kids’ school, and training for long distance races. However, at the end of 2016, I made the conscious decision to be more engaged with our democracy.
I joined a local chapter of Indivisible which focuses on increasing civic engagement and I started contacting my elected representatives. Within Indivisible I started to organize opportunities for my community members to be more civically involved as well. It was empowering to be more informed and more engaged; however, it was frustrating too. I started to notice that many of the decision makers from the local level to the federal level were not actively engaged with their constituents. There appears to be a disconnect between the people and the elected officials even though the basis of our democracy is having a government by the people.
I am running for Eau Claire City Council because I strive to be the change I want to see. I am running for District 1 which is the Northside of Eau Claire and I would be honored to represent these Eau Claire citizens. I would actively seek out their thoughts, experiences, and opinions. I would make sure they will know, to the best of my ability, of any pending decisions that would impact their neighborhoods.
Even though only the Northside residents would be my constituents, I would also bring this value of seeking public input to the city council. As a Licensed Professional Counselor who thoroughly enjoys her job, I not only know how to ask questions and listen but I also appreciate the importance of the process of listening, understanding, and advocating.
