My name is Juwan Blocker and I am a lifetime resident of Prince George's County, Maryland; a graduate of the Prince George's County Public School System; and a current History and Government student at Bowie State University.

In 2016 I was elected to the Prince George's County Board of Education for the 2016-2017 Academic School Year.

As a member of the Board of Education I advocated on behalf of and represented 130,000 students. While on the Board, I focused on making county students aware of school board issues and decisions, encouraging them to take action through advocacy to influence school board policy and decision making. I always voted on behalf on what was in the best interest of students, including voting to support a third party investigation of the Head Start program and supporting a motion to add additional math and reading specialists in county schools that needed it.

My most notable accomplishments on the board include leading a successful effort to require the school system to restore funding for Advanced Placement (A.P.) exams so that students could continue to take A.P. tests without worrying about the financial burden of paying $93 per exam; ensuring the school system reinstated a creative writing program at a performing arts middle school; supporting the removal of students from District Heights Elementary School which had high levels of mold; and sponsoring the implementation of a third party records audit that discovered systemic irregularities and resulted in mandatory orders to improve the system’s procedures both for the graduation process and for grade changes.

Having gained knowledge of how our school system operates and seeing how easily politics can negatively affect students’ education, I decided to take a stand and run again for a seat on the Board. I understand that we need people who not only are qualified to serve but also will not be bought off by the political establishment. I have held and will continue to hold myself and the school system leadership accountable to ensuring that every student graduates college or career ready, to enacting full transparency, and to reacting fully to the needs of our community.

My top priorities on a new term on the Board of Education will include improving maintenance and school building infrastructure; fighting for the reduction of wasteful spending; expanding, supporting, and encouraging more after school academic programs; restoring school culture and teacher morale; and supporting and expanding specialty programs for ESOL Students.

I truly hope that I can count on your support!

“As an advocate for our children, I support Juwan Blocker! Juwan not only has the core values of a Good Leader, charater, vision, honesty, integrity and the drive/ willingness to get in the weeds for his students. I have watched this young build a consensus with his peers and other Board members in an effort to protect their rights and demand immediate compliance from the administration! Juwan stood steadfast with his goal to continue payments for AP students! Despite clear attempts from the CEO, Board Chair and other Board members to shut him up with their obvious intimidation tactics, Juwan could not be moved. He speaks in facts, not lies and he comes prepared with supporting evidence. We need the Juwan's of our county, to help rid our system of wicked crouption that has deprived students of a free and public education, placed our childrens' safety at risk and set them up for failure after graduation. A man looking out for our future. Support his campaign.”

“I've been listening to the news recently and was not surprised to hear that everyone is now changing their minds about the grade-changing issue. Interestingly though, no one has mentioned you or the other three Board members who called for the state to look into it. I hope that you are satisfied with good feeling that you were right to push the issue, and have now been vindicated. Thanks for your perseverance on this problem. Have a nice Christmas, and new year. Good luck on your campaign - we can use someone like you who will take a stand on an important subject like this, and follow through on it.”
