Dear Friends,

I have decided to run in 2018 for Torrance Unified School Board.

For the past 10 years, it has been a privilege for me to be a Torrance resident and live, work, and serve among the many wonderful people of our city.  This year, many friends, neighbors and members of the school board asked me to consider taking a step up in serving our community by running for school board.  After much thought and consideration, I have accepted the challenge.

As the husband of a teacher in Torrance Unified and father of three children who will be attending high school, middle school and elementary school in 2018, I believe I am in a unique position to understand the needs of our students, parents, and teachers.

For the past 10 years, I have worked hard to raise funds for our local elementary school through a non-profit organization, Adams Elementary Educational Alliance.    Through Adams Elementary Educational Alliance, I organized a golf tournament sponsored by local businesses and supported by community members.  We raised over $75,000 throughout the years to provide assistance to students and teachers in in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).  We were able to buy much needed chrome books, televisions, and projectors as well as revamp our computer lab.  Even though a majority of our parents do not play golf, I successfully worked with local businesses and individuals to partner with the public elementary school to help make our tournament a success.

In addition, I have served on the School Site council for John Adams Elementary School and received an honorary service award in 2015.  I have coached our schools basketball team for the past two years, and have been involved in coaching basketball at Torrance Recreation for the past five years.  I have been a soccer coach, assistant baseball coach and have volunteered in different community programs.  I also started a church in the South Bay, which helped me to better understand the needs of our city and its residents.

While the Asian-American population makes up a large part of our city and over 30% of our student population, we do not have any representation on the board. As a second generation Korean American, I would offer a different perspective by bringing awareness of the needs and challenges of this community to the board, and help them become more engaged in our district.

Our board has done a wonderful job and I plan to continue the tradition of working hard for our TUSD students, families, faculty and staff.  It would be an honor for me to be elected to serve the city and school district that my family and I call home. But, I can't do this without you! I need your help. You can help by supporting and giving to my campaign AND by telling others about me and my campaign.  My goal is to raise $25,000 for an effective campaign.  I'm excited and humbled to be running for School Board and I look forward to a great election on November 6th!
