I am a working parent. Like many in Southwest Washington, I work very hard to provide for my family and keep them fed, clothed and housed. Unfortunately there are forces at work that make it hard for many working parents to find and keep a stable job.
One of those is the "At Will" employment law that Washington State has. This allows all employers to let someone go for any reason they want. There needs to be no documentation of wrong doing, warnings, or write-ups before someone is terminated from their job. Essentially, they could make anything up, and not have to have any proof to let you go. Employers who exercise this law, are literally messing with their employees livelihoods and ability to provide for their families.
Another, is childcare. Currently, monthly childcare costs are equal to that of an average months salary. So in a two parent household, one of the parents are literally working just to have their children in childcare. That is why there are so many families struggling, because they can only afford to have one parent work.
Lastly, there are no laws in place to protect parents from losing their job to care for a sick child. If you are a single parent, and your child is sick, you have 2 options. Leave them home alone, or miss work and risk getting fired. That isn't fair to the employee, who may not have a choice.
These issues are very important to me, as they are to many families in Southwest Washington. There are several issues that I am passionate about in addition to the ones listed above. I would love the opportunity to to talk to you and find out what is important to you! I believe that I could be effective in making changes to state laws that would benefit everyone in my district.
Please read the updates for my stance on other important issues as well!
