We all are responsible for our most precious resource--our children. As a mother and civil rights lawyer, I believe education is the greatest equalizer, but too many of our students are denied the opportunity to realize their dream. DeKalb has allowed inequities in regards to funding, disciplinary protocols, and access to an excellent education within the district for too long.

It is with the encouragement of many that I embark on this journey to serve our students in DeKalb County. I would not be able to do so without having the opportunity to excel in my own educational endeavors. My personal challenges inside the classroom, as well as, the issues I have experienced with my own children has lead me to seek a seat on The DeKalb County School Board.

In 2015, my son, began sixth grade at a middle school on the East side of DeKalb. The neighborhood public school had extremely low performance scores. Upon enrollment, my son would come home almost daily crying because there was a fight at school. He could not focus in the chaotic environment. In a matter of months, we had to make a change and moved to the North side. At my son's new middle school, it was like night and day compared to where we moved from on the East side. The academic rigor was unparalleled, the aura of high expectations danced through the halls of the schools from the teachers/staff, and the student diversity resembled a United Nations conference. My son is now soaring at our local high school. Yet, it took us moving to a more affluent zip code for him to have access to a high-quality education. I strongly believe that race, socio-economic status, or zip code should not determine the level of education a child is afforded.

In 2016, I volunteered to serve on my daughter’s charter school board. By serving on the board, I saw first-hand the dire need for equitable funding for all public schools including charter schools. Georgia charter schools are not allotted the equivalent amount of funds as local public schools due to an antiquated funding formula called Quality Basic Education (“QBE”) that the State Legislature still utilizes to fund the districts. The broader issue is that public schools have been underfunded by the State for many years. Overtime, the under-funding of all schools in the State coupled with the discrepancies in the QBE funding formula has set our state up for failure. As a result, many authorized local charter schools are struggling to pay infrastructure cost of dilapidated buildings and cannot continue their innovative initiatives.

I am a product of public schools, a former teacher of Atlanta Public Schools, and proud graduate of Spelman College and Florida A&M University College of Law. I am committed and determined to gain a seat on The DeKalb County School Board--District 2 to balance the scales of equity in our district. To do this work--I need your support. Together as a collective we can tackle the issues of school safety, equitable funding, disproportionate discipline protocols, and access to a high quality education. Thank you all for your support in advance.

Here to Serve,

Candice D. McKinley
