I am running for the office of Superintendent of Education for the Marshall County School System. I have always had a passion for teaching and education, and for helping young people achieve their goals in life. As a classroom teacher of 20 years, I have seen firsthand what a difference an effective classroom teacher can have in positively influencing the lives of the children in their classes. Outside of the home, teachers have the most influence and impact on our young people today.

I am running for the office of Superintendent to put the focus of the Marshall County Schools back on the students and the teachers. The real work of education is in the classroom, with great teachers being allowed to teach, and helping their students achieve to their full potential. The most important person in the field of education is the classroom teacher. No other group in education has as much impact on a student’s academic achievement as the classroom teacher. These tireless, hardworking, and generous individuals are with our children for eight hours and even more daily, working with them, teaching them, and helping them to become the best person that they can be. They not only teach our children academics but also incredibly valuable lessons about life outside of the school environment. That is why it is so critical, so important, that as the Superintendent of schools I will focus my attention and available resources on helping to enhance, and strengthen the teaching and learning environment. All others, from the Superintendent down through the administration of the system, should work in a support role to see that this happens. As your Superintendent, I will ensure that it does.

If elected, I want to do the following:

  • Reorganize how new teachers are interviewed and hired for the system to make it fair to all.
  • Implement aggressive recruitment strategies to locate the best teacher candidates, before they are hired by surrounding systems.
  • Hold hiring/job fairs in May to seek out the best and brightest teachers.
  • Work to improve the discipline in our schools and update school board policies regarding school bullying.
  • Ensure all earned teacher units are used in teaching positions, not supervisory positions for most of the school day.
  • Review all job descriptions within the system to eliminate any possible overlap or financial waste.
  • Ensure that building administrators and principals have what they NEED to operate their schools successfully.
  • Ensure that classroom teachers have what they NEED to ensure student success and achievement in their classrooms.
  • Work to bring back music and art to the elementary schools.
  • Work to ensure all four high schools have the necessary electives they need to offer a full master schedule of classes for their students.
  • Review every program, and line item in the school system budget, to ensure that each dollar spent is done so to help our students be successful.
  • Be visible often in the individual schools, visit and talk with classroom teachers, and listen to all suggestions on how to improve operations within the school system.
  • Be transparent in budgeting and in all system financial transactions.
  • Keep the focus on the students with every action taken and every dollar spent.

Recently a report card was issued for all schools and school systems across the State of Alabama. While the calculations that go into the grades received by each school and system are somewhat complex, the ending grades are designed so that they are easy to understand at a glance. Individual Schools and School Systems are given a letter grade, similar to those that are issued on student report cards. For this past year, the Marshall County School System received an overall “C” rating. While not a “low” grade, it still denotes a sense of “average”. I know that I speak for many in our system in saying that average is not where we want our schools to be.

As Superintendent, I will work hand in hand with our teachers, administrators, parents, and community stakeholders to move our individual schools and school system up to the level that we all know they can achieve. Our teachers serve our students with a true servant’s heart. I will serve our teachers and school administrators in the same fashion. But in order to get a chance, we need funds for signs, newspaper ads, and supplies for this election.

Personal Information

I received my degree in Instrumental Music Education from Troy State University in 1998. I then completed my Masters in Instructional Leadership in 2005, and my Educational Specialist Degree in Instructional Leadership in 2012, both through the University of Alabama. I am also certified in several core subjects, such as History 6-12, General Science 6-12, and Drivers Education.

My wife Felicia works at Temporary Emergency Services of Arab, a division of Marshall County Christian Services as the benevolence director. She also is the childcare coordinator for the Christian Women's Job Corp location in Arab. At TESA, she works as a benevolence director helping families with food, basic hygiene supplies as well as other needs for families that come in with various needs.  We have been married for 20 amazing years, and we have three children:  Sons Joshua, 17, Jordan, 14, and daughter Rebecca, 12. We love camping any and all outdoor activities and spending time together. Our family is active with Lifepoint Church in Arab where I play bass guitar in the praise and worship band.

We are gaining momentum thanks to YOU!

The past couple of months have been tough. But the past few weeks, parents have been contacting me and have really shown me that change is not only needed, it is WANTED! Please go like my facebook page to stay up to date about events I will be attending or other vital information that pertains to this campaign!

We need people willing to help host fundraisers, which will be necessary to raise the money needed for a successful campaign. Donations will NOT be accepted for political or personal favors down the road. So I am counting on the generosity of the people of Marshall County in the form of donations and fundraising events to fully fund this campaign!
