CANDIDATE VICTORIA MITCHNER for Brevard County Commissioner, District 2

This year, we have the chance to fundamentally shape the future of our local government ….

THE INTRO

By no way am I a politician, to be honest I never thought that I’d be running for elected office. I am a mother of five amazing children and soon to be wife of a wonderful man who is in the construction industry; I am a Army Combat Veteran, serving this country honorably for almost fifteen years.  I was born in Rockledge at Wuesthoff Hospital and raised in Canaveral Groves; as a child, I loved riding my dirt bike with my brother and sister, feeding our pet chickens and running track.

Despite not being from a rich family, I was taught to work hard, love and provide for your family. My father is a construction worker, he’s been a mason, foreman, forklift operator you name it he’s done it in the construction industry. My mother is janitor and has always worked in the hospitality industry. Most importantly I am proud of my parents because both are hard labor workers and they taught me strong values that stick with me to this day.

I’ve been in government my entire working career starting at the lowest level and working my way up; I understand how the government operates. I’ve drafted budget proposals that exceed over a $1M, staffed employees and assigned equipment costing over $1M. I’ve drafted policies and procedures that were approved with no revision for higher level government officials. I can go on and on, but the most important thing is I seek to understand people. A person can have several degrees but lack common sense and how to deal with the common person.

I am running to be the voice for ALL of the residents in District 2 despite their socioeconomic status, to enhance our space activities and protect our natural resources while enhancing economic development.

District 2, meet Vickey!

If elected some of my top priorities for citizens in District 2 are:

- advocate for viable solutions to clean up the lagoon along with proper disposal of dredged lagoon waste

- champion science partnerships with local public schools to allow students to assist with restoration efforts of the lagoon; teaching children ecological awareness    and environmentalism

- negotiate with large companies prior to them settling within the district to hire a percentage of local residents giving citizens an opportunity at better paying jobs

- advocate for Brevard County employees who plead at commission meetings for increases that are still subpar

- provide aid to small businesses within the district while giving tax breaks or waiving fees for a new small business

- ensure that all roadways regardless of the area you live are safe and are in good condition

Back in February, I had the opportunity to meet with voters in District 2 and ask them what would they like their Commissioner to be focus on. The Lagoon was the first thing to be mention and our lagoon is very import including our wetlands. Voters also expressed their concerns with the sewer system, a functional transit system, oversight committees for law enforcement, smart parks and affordable homes for single male families to name a few that were mentioned. Even though this group had my attention and gave me something to start working towards, I still want to hear from the rest of the district. So with that being said, I am going to go on a tour hosting ‘Listening Sessions’ were I simply listen to the voters. People should be heard, as a voter I want to be heard too so I understand the importance of this.

District 2, I want to listen to you and what you feel is important for our community.

THE STANCE

The next 10 years are critical especially with the current issues with our lagoon, a viable solution is needed. Next is moving the county towards becoming the world’s space industry headquarters; we have Kennedy Space Center sitting in our backyard and is such a huge opportunity that shouldn’t be missed. Economic development would be my third item, the county needs jobs that residents are able to earn a livable wage and support their families, live out the American dream and own their own home.

When elected to the county commission my primary area of interest would be to promote economic development. I understand there are families out here that are facing tough decisions, whether to pay all of their light bill or pay half and buy groceries. I hope to work with small and big business owners and helping them getting residents to work. Currently the new Walmart Distribution Center in Cocoa has about 400 vacant positions and the average starting pay for an entry level position is around $16 hourly. This is the type of business the county needs to help our local residents to earn a livable wage to support their families.

When we have more people in the workplace they are working and paying taxes, which will help fund the lagoon tax clean up efforts. This is something that I’ve explained to many people who are big on environment, I’d love to have our local environmental issue listed first but I understand it takes money to support the clean up.

My other top priorities for citizens in District 2 are:

  • advocate for viable solutions to clean up the lagoon along with proper disposal of dredged lagoon waste

  • champion science partnerships with local public schools to allow students to assist with restoration efforts of the lagoon; teaching children ecological awareness and environmentalism
