My name is Tim Schaiberger and I am asking to be your State Representative. The 103rd District of Michigan includes Ogemaw, Crawford, Roscommon, Missaukee, and Kalkaska counties.  I am a lifelong resident of Ogemaw county.  I have served on the West Branch City Council, West Branch Planning Commission, and The WBRMC Hospital Board. I have also served as President of the West Branch Kiwanis, Executive Director of the Ogemaw Kids Club, Junior Achievement volunteer, and I am a small business owner.  I am heavily involved with the WB-RC Music boosters and perform every year at their fundraiser.  I have contributed time and energy to help the people of West Branch and the surrounding areas.  I can take that level of assistance and attitude to Lansing, and help better represent the citizens of Northern Michigan.

I have several issues that I will be focusing on in the course of my campaign. They will include the following:

Public Education-We need to make sure that our children are being educated in the best way by teachers who work hard because they are appreciated and taken care of. If we can’t keep good teachers or recruit new ones, it will adversely affect our children and they will not have the best opportunity for learning and growing as citizens. I will support any measure that helps our local children succeed and in turn will lead to a healthier, more educated populace. I will support teachers unions and all the benefits they have earned. I will make sure that they, and every other public employee, has a seat at the table for negotiations and any other issues that need attention.

Post Secondary Public Education_-I will work to find a way for us to assist with both trade schools and community colleges, such as Kirtland to offer students some viable and more affordable options compared to going to a 4 year  university like Michigan State or Central MIchigan.  Local trades and services could thrive if we have more people with a post secondary education. We need electricians, plumbers, linemen, mechanics, and more in our community. All jobs are important if you want to have a well functioning society. These are good, well paying jobs. We need to be able to provide assistance to people who pursue these professions.

Veteran affairs- We need to make sure that every Michigan Veteran is taken care of and I will pursue any and all legislation that will help with assistance, job training, and healthcare.

Citizens United/Money in Politics-There is so much money today in political campaigns. You have to have it but you don’t want to be corrupted by it. Please visit my facebook page to keep up with my fundraising goals and to see how the campaign is progressing. Volunteer and donation opportunities are always available www.facebook.com/voteschaiberger/.

Elections in Michigan-Everyone in Michigan who is able to vote should be able to vote. I want to work for automatic registration and also work to have elections held as holidays or on the weekend. We should be doing all we can to make sure every single vote is counted and cast!

Gerrymandering-I support the ballot proposal of the Voters Not Politicians to have an independent Citizens redistricting Commission

Criminal Justice-I feel our criminal justice system is at its maximum level and we can find better ways of training and hopefully reform some laws to make sure we are not using state funds to house, clothe, and feed non-violent offenders. I support drug courts and rehabilitation programs so it can free our police to confront dangerous and actual harmful aspects of our society such as assault, rape, theft, and murder.

Infrastructure-We have roads and bridges and sewer systems that all need attention. I will fight for every dollar we can get to help bring all of these public goods up to par. It will help everyone and provide much needed work to local contractors and construction crews.

Public service employees-Teachers, Police, Firemen, and all other municipal workers deserve the best. They are here for all of us and their dedication to public service should be recognized. I will support all public service employees and their unions.

Outdoor sports and recreation-I will support common sense hunting and fishing rules and will provide for outdoor activities and sports.  The options that the 103rd district offers to outdoor enthusiasts is paramount and I will help promote and protect our wonderful nature setting

Investment in small communities-As a small town council member for the past decade I know my way around the needs of small communities. I will fight to make sure that small communities are taken into consideration for state funds and grants. I am involved with Governor Snyder’s rising tide program. This program finds struggling communities and helps them reassess and build different aspects to help the community thrive through resource allocation and state assistance in job creation, revenue generation, and investments in infrastructure and other aspects of government aid to help the community. It has been tried successfully in Grayling and we can have the same results in West Branch and consequently, the entire 103rd, if we work together.

Cannabis Decriminalization-Michigan has had decriminalized medical marijuana for a decade. Full legalization, and the tax revenue that it will generate, along with less public money spent on courts and prisons, will help our citizens across the board by providing much needed help with infrastructure and education. I am supporting the Regulate Marijuana like Alcohol ballot initiative as I believe that we can use the potential revenue from this proposal to help fund government services like going towards infrastructure improvements and more money for investment into education I mentioned above.  I have been to Colorado and witnessed first hand that with the regulated legalization of marijuana, nothing really changed, except less people in prison and they had way more money for schools and drug use prevention programs. They have made half a billion dollars in revenue since 2014. That’s a lot of potholes filled and textbooks.

I am asking for your vote so I can go to Lansing and make sure Northern Michigan is a higher priority on state revenue sharing and resources. I believe in more local control over government and I will fight for the rights of the people who elect me. Thank you for taking the time to read this.
