Nancy Makar moved to Florida in 1974 from Louisiana and graduated from Florida State University in 1976.  Nancy  became a teacher in Pasco County before starting Suncoast Medical Oxygen and Wellwood Funeral Home (currently Grace), both businesses served Hernando County for many years.

Nancy received her Master of Social Work from the University of South Florida in 1989 and during the time she was working on her MSW and interning, she was a school social worker in Hernando County.

In 1991 she opened Pathways Counseling Center in Spring Hill as the only therapist with one receptionist.  Today her business is a thriving counseling center with a staff of 15.

Nancy’s two adult children graduated from Springstead High School and Central High School and are now residents of Hillsborough & Pinellas Counties.  Nancy has 5 biological grandchildren and a “bonus” family of four in Tallahassee.

Nancy has been active in volunteering and fundraising for several years in a variety of venues, Angelus House, Toys for Tots, National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI), Patriot Guard Riders and the Humane Society of the Nature Coast.  She is a member of the Spring Hill Garden Club, the Spring Hill Art League, the Hernando Chamber of Commerce, and is on steering committees for Kass Circle Revitalization and the Dawn Center.  Nancy was  Legislative Liaison and a past President of her local National Association of Social Workers. (NASW)

Nancy decided to run for County Commissioner because she believes her skills in her profession will be helpful to the residents of Hernando County.  She has been a professional listener for over 30 years and has used those skills to help people communicate, compromise and repair their careers, lives and families.  Nancy believes that someone objective would be an asset to the County Commission.  Nancy has always had the ability to see all sides in a situation and that would be refreshing for our county.

Nancy says her main “issue” of concern is YOU!  She believes by asking residents to speak about their concerns and passions she can do the research to find solutions and be the Commissioner to speak for the people of Hernando County.

In addition to your concerns Nancy wants to make sure that Mental Health and Substance Abuse receives the proper funding in the county to address the issues of abuse and misunderstanding of mental health and addiction.

Nancy has worked with children and families all her life and believes the children of our county are our future.  Nancy wants a clean and safe environment for children and families to play, and participate in adventures such as biking, hiking, trail riding, kayaking and boating, while keeping our coastline beautiful and natural.  We have the largest and most beautiful underwater springs here in Hernando County and the Weeki Wachee spring must be protected at all costs.

Hernando county must strengthen our work force by attracting clean energy business and industry that can offer employee benefits and pay greater than minimum wage.   Being a small business owner, Nancy believes we must support small businesses, as well as our major industries by bringing technological and other companies into our county.  These new employment opportunities will strengthen our workforce enabling more residents to patronize existing businesses and keep our economy thriving.  Economic growth is a must.   However, responsible fiscal decisions need to be made to accommodate this growth while ensuring our infrastructure is adequately funded.

Why is Nancy running now?  Hernando County has been good to Nancy, her family and her businesses and she wants to give back.  Nancy will do this by representing YOU the people who also care about the quality of life here in our county.

Nancy is a natural leader, solid business person and an effective communicator who can set boundaries and assist constituents in researching topics of concern and the best way to address them.  Nancy is a problem solver and is committed to a "no favors in return for contributions"  policy in her campaign.   Nancy believes the only thing more powerful than positive thought is “collective” positive thought which is what Hernando needs - a coming together of everyone.

Nancy says "Better Planning equals Better Government equals a Better County!"  Nancy feels that If she does not speak up and stand up she then becomes part of the problem.  Hernando County needs a Board of County Commissioners who are diverse in thought and experience, ensuring that all residents are represented and respected.

Nancy’s campaign is a grassroots effort.  She is depending on you to be part of a new solution for Hernando County.  Volunteer, donate and most of all vote for Nancy Makar as Dist. 4 Hernando County Commissioner.

“Nancy is one in a million-I know because I've tried 999,999 counselors! Just kidding! I've had the pleasure of knowing Nancy many years. I was one of her students. She is intelligent, calm but speaks what's on her mind. She's a fighter for the things and people she believes in! She can identify with most people and has great understanding and direction. Nancy knows the problems this county faces and if any one can bring those problems to light and resolve them-it is Nancy Makar. She's the only choice for Hernando County!”
