Born and raised in Orlando Florida to a single mother living in a four-bedroom home with my brother, grandmother, two uncles and one aunt. I am proud of my native upbringing and public education. After graduating from high school, I worked full-time as a gas station attendant while contemplated whether to go to college or the military.
After a year of reflection, I decided to enter the military as many of my family members had done before me. I enlisted in the United States Army and spent eight years in active duty. During my term, I had the privilege of being stationed in Germany, Korea, Texas, South Carolina, Georgia, and Kentucky.
Once leaving the military I accepted the chance to become a correctional officer for the State of Florida. After my time as a Correctional Officer (post 9-11), I embraced the desire to serve my country again in a different way. I joined the Florida National Guard, during which time I was activated multiple times to support the people of Florida recovering from natural disasters. In addition, I remained gainfully employed working as a government contractor in IT for Joint Communications Support Element (JCSE) at MacDill Air Force Base. Later I accepted a position as a Software Engineer at United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM). Within a year I was promoted to IT Manager of the Application Development Department (J6).
I earned a Bachelor's of Applied Science in Technology Management from St. Petersburg College and a Master's of Science in Information Technology from Florida Institute of Technology.
I am currently married to Aliyat. We have been together for over seven years. Together we have two daughters and one son, two long coat German Shepherds and one Yorkie. One daughter lives in Tampa FL. and the others live out of state. All support me in my political endeavors.
Why are you running for office?
I’m running because I do not accept what has been presented as our only options. I have given some serious thought to what is necessary to effect change and I am running because I am invested in making that change happen.
It’s time for everyday Americans who believe in America to step up for America’s ideals. We must heal the partisanship that continues to destroy America. Americans political system has become corrupt by partisanship. Somehow, at some point the GOP Congress membership has acquiesced to Trump’s partisan rhetoric. The GOP Politicians have placed above their constituents, the priorities of special interest groups.
I’m running because I have fought for and love this country. I want what is best for ALL of us. Crucial to this is my belief that affordable healthcare is something we should strive for, for every citizen. This includes access to imperative healthcare systems such as the ACA, Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security Supplements and private company investments in employee retirement programs.
Another issue for which I am extremely concerned is our students being able to find academic success in safe places. If nothing else, the Parkland travesty made clear the vulnerability of public spaces. Malls, open churches, movie theaters as well as school districts have been forced to acknowledge the reality of the fact that we in America are not guaranteed safe spaces. I believe America deserves better. We deserve leaders who embody our values and principals.
